#1 Harry Potter actress Emma Watson is the latest high profile Brit to have been implicated in the ongoing Panama Papers scandal.

#2 Offshore companies enable rich people to hide money abroad (for a fee), which means that the government can’t tax it.

While they are sometimes used for other purposes such as to keep business matters secret an internal memo (discovered in the leak) confirmed that 95% of the companies managed by Mossack Fonseca are "vehicles to avoid taxes".

#3 The 26-year-old, who is taking a break from acting to work as a United Nations goodwill ambassador and women's rights campaigner,

is a shareholder in one of approximately 200,000 offshore corporations whose information was published online Monday by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

#4 The database, released online yesterday,

reveals Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson is a shareholder of a company based in the British overseas territory.

#5 A spokesperson for Emma has denied that her offshore company is among this 95%.

"Emma (like many high profile individuals) set up an offshore company for the sole purpose of protecting her anonymity and safety. UK companies are required to publicly publish details of their shareholders and therefore do not give her the necessary anonymity required to protect her personal safety, which has been jeopardised in the past owing to such information being publicly available.

Offshore companies do not publish these shareholder details. Emma receives absolutely no tax or monetary advantages from this offshore company whatsoever only privacy."

#6 The website hosting the documents went into meltdown last night,

as thousands of people logged on to get a glimpse of how the wealthy hide their money.

It lists some 200,000 shell companies and trusts held in more than 20 tax havens around the world.

#7 Watson's presence in the database was first reported by the British magazine The Spectator.

The Times of London reported that Watson used the company, Falling Leaves Ltd., in 2013 to purchase a home in the British capital worth approximately 2.8 million pounds ($4 million).

#10 When the leak first came to light, it shone a spotlight on dozens of politicians,

celebrities and sports stars, who use the secretive firms to avoid tax. And Iceland's Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson resigned after it was alleged he'd used an offshore firm to hide investments worth millions of pounds.
