Not all friendships last forever. Even the strongest of bromances and the tightest of gal pals can go their separate ways at some point. Obviously, some friends are for life, but we can’t expect that every partnership is like that. Things change, as do people. We get older; our situations evolve. Sh*t, as they say, happens. Maybe it’s a new spouse or a new friend that comes in between one-time best friends or maybe it’s words. This kind of thing happens all the time, and in normal life, no one cares except for the people involved. But this is Hollywood. Everyone gets a say on the relationships in Hollywood. If we see two celebs hanging out a lot and then, all of a sudden, they aren’t anymore, we have to ask questions. We need to know what happened.
Famous Hollywood Friendships That Were Shattered
#1 John Cusack and Jeremy Piven
These two guys were inseparable. When asked about where it all started for them, Piven said, "We met when we were kids at my parents' theater and my parents were doing The Seagull. We took turns playing the child and we were friends ever since. And Joan is such an angel. I have a lot of history with the Cusacks." Then, after Piven landed the role of Ari Gold in Entourage, the two stopped being seen in public together. Piven was asked if they were even friends anymore, to which he responded, "No comment. I mean, you could fill in the blank, I bet." So, what happened? It's a bit unclear, but Piven did say, "It just says so much about a person if he has space for other people's success."
#2 Winona Ryder and Gwyneth Paltrow
Way back in the mid-to-late 90s, Gwyneth Paltrow and Winona Ryder were best pals. They lived together; they dated best friends Ben Affleck and Matt Damon; it was magical. But then they stopped talking. Rumors of Paltrow stealing the part in Shakespeare in Love from Ryder came out, but who knows for sure? To hear it from Paltrow, it was Ryder who did wrong by her, but Paltrow says a lot of whacko things, so we don't believe a word of it. See what you think. "Back in the day, I had a ‘frenemy,'" she said of Ryder, though she never specifically named her. "Who, as it turned out, was pretty hellbent on taking me down. This person really did what they could to hurt me. I was deeply upset, I was angry, I was all of those things you feel when you find out that someone you thought you liked was venomous and dangerous." In case you missed it, this sneaky devil Paltrow has set herself up as the victim, but there's more. She continued, "I restrained myself from fighting back. I tried to take the high road. But one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and happiness." What Paltrow has done here is establish trust with the reader by lightly criticizing herself. As readers, we say, she must be telling the truth about being wronged because she's judging her poor reaction to Winona's shoplifting arrest. That must also mean that she really was the victim in the first place. We don't buy it Gwen. Maybe Winona just got sick of how pretentious you are.
#3 Nina Dobrev and Nikki Reed
When Nina Dobrev was dating her Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder, the world was right. Flowers smelled a little nicer; the sky was a little bluer. No, enough. Stop. We can't keep this charade up. To be quite honest, we didn't care one bit. Well, this happy couple had a friend who did care. Nikki Reed. Reed may have been Dobrev's friend on the surface, but, underneath, she was like a hungry lioness, biding her time, waiting to pounce on Somerhalder the moment she spotted weakness in the couple. Weakness did come. Like 99% of Hollywood couples, Dobrev and Somerhalder split. Sure, Reed stayed close to her friend for a little while pretending to be her bestie, but she was secretly trying to hook up with Somerhalder, and hook up with him she did. Now they're married and Dobrev wasn't even invited to the wedding.
#4 Jennifer Aniston and Male “Friends” Cast
During the filming of Friends, the cast always seemed so family like and loving, but now that the show's off the air, things have changed a little bit. This became painfully obvious for the male members of the cast, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer, when none of them were invited to Jennifer Aniston's wedding to Justin Theroux. When they were asked about the wedding, Perry said "I was surprised. I didn't know about it." At least LeBlanc knew about the wedding, but he said "If she wanted me there, I would have been there." And Schwimmer won't even make a comment about it, which means that he's probably the angriest of the bunch.
#5 Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton
Sorry, we promise that this one entry is the only one that involves Paris Hilton. Years ago, when Paris and Nicole Richie were famous, people cared about their lives. Or, at least, they watched their simple lives play out on The Simple Life. These two called each other besties and they were close. There's no doubt. Then something happened. They broke up. "It's no big secret that Nicole and I are no longer friends," said Hilton. "Nicole knows what she did, and that's all I'm ever going to say about it." Even though Richie says she has a complex understanding of friendship, so she'll always be friends with Paris, it's safe to say that Paris doesn't have a complex understanding of anything, so she certainly won't be considering Richie her friend.
#6 Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis
The news outlets and gossip columns went wild when Sylvester Stallone took to Twitter to call Bruce Willis "Greedy and Lazy" after the Die Hard star backed out of The Expendables 3. Though Willis' name was never explicitly used, it was obvious who the Tweet was directed to. Later, when Sly was asked if his relationship with Willis was done, he said, "This is just a matter of economics. Bruce has been a lifelong friend. I still consider him a friend, at least on my side. This is something that came out of frustration, but it also turned out okay." Since then, the two action legends have apparently moved on from their beef, but don't be surprised if we never see them in a film together again.
#7 Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag
If you ever watch Laguna Beach or The Hills, you might remember Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag and their beautiful friendship that ended in flames. The reasons why they fell off vary depending on who you ask, but the narrative on The Hills was that Heidi Montag and her dweeby partner, Spencer Pratt, started a rumor about Conrad and a potential sex tape. This all led to a confrontation between the two at a nightclub and had Lauren yell the now-infamous line, "You know what you did!" Well, years later, no one cares about these two anymore, but it certainly was big news at the time.
#8 Jay Leno and David Letterman
For years and years, there was a well-known feud between late night competitors Jay Leno and David Letterman. It apparently started back when Letterman was supposed to get the Johnny Carson show, but Leno got it instead. Now, some say that this feud was fabricated as a publicity stunt, but they've both said some harsh things about the other. When Letterman went on Oprah, he was asked about their relationship. "Jay and I were friends we were always friends, before all of this happened," he said, "I've never met anyone quite like Jay. And I will say, and I'm happy to say, I think he's the funniest guy I've ever known," Letterman added. "Just flat out. If you go and see him do his nightclub act just the funniest, the smartest, wonderful observationist and very appealing as a comic. Therefore, the fact that he is maybe the most insecure person I have ever known I could never reconcile that."
