After being discovered smoking cocaine in the cells or bringing in contraband for their beaus behind bars, jail staff have been fired or even put in jail themselves.
The issue of inmates getting romantically or sexually involved with prison employees is currently "completely out of control," according to former jail officer Neil "Sam" Samworth, who spent 11 years working at Manchester's infamous Strangeways prison.
But he noted that this is not surprising, as new recruits are frequently hired by major prisons right out of college.
"They've got the youngest workforce ever. They are literally seeing kids on wings straight out of college-aged 18, 19, 20," he explained.
"You've got a very inexperienced, young workforce and you've got a lot of lads locked up who have something that is really dangerous – it's called charm."
According to the Mirror, 18 guards at HMP Berwyn, the largest prison in Britain, were fired or resigned after having relationships with inmates.
These three individuals—Jennifer Gavan, 27, Ayshea Gunn, 27, and Emily Watson, 26—all ended up in jail after developing relationships with inmates.
After being accused of having an improper connection with prisoner Alex Coxon, now 25 years old, Gavan entered a guilty plea to misconduct in public office between April and July 2020.
While Khuram Razaq was serving a 12-year sentence for conspiring to conduct robbery, Gunn received a 12-month sentence for having a sexual relationship with him in 2019.
Over the course of their four-month liaison, she placed numerous sexually explicit phone conversations with the "dangerous" prisoner and smuggled a pair of knickers into her bra.
When Gunn's bedroom was inspected, pictures taken in Razaq's cell and a picture of the couple kissing with the officer wearing her uniform were discovered.
John McGee, with whom Watson had reportedly gotten "infatuated," was the subject of a sex act on Christmas Day in his cell, for which Watson was sentenced to prison.
The number of shady relationships between prisoners and staff members has increased across the nation, not just in the jail in Wrexham.
At HMP Parc in Bridgend, Wales, Elyse Hibbs was charged with having a relationship with a prisoner there.
The two met while Hibbs was treating Pullen's sickness, and from May to July, the prisoner had a love relationship with Hibbs.
After confessing to engaging in "flirtatious" phone conversations with the prisoner while he was imprisoned, Hibbs received a six-month sentence in jail in October.
Hibbs Pullen, who was given an extra four years on top of his existing sentence for smuggling a phone into the prison, was told by the court that he "got in too deep."
Another lady, Joanne Hunter, a master's student, is charged with having an extramarital affair and smuggling marijuana and a cell phone into HMP Forest Bank, Salford, in 2020 for a prisoner.
The 27-year-old acknowledged bringing or conveying marijuana into the prison during his trial on Thursday, but he denied smuggling the phone. He also pleaded guilty to conspiring to engage in misconduct in public office.
Judge warned her that "immediate custody is inevitable in cases like this" before sentencing her on April 25. Juliette Berry, the prosecutor, said an application would be made for the charge to lie on file.
According to the Ministry of Justice, 31 female officers have been fired from their positions in England and Wales since 2019 for having inappropriate interactions with inmates.
A spokesman for the Prison Service stated: "The vast majority of Prison Service staff are hardworking and honest. But we are doing more than ever to catch and punish the small number who break the rules."
