Former Florida Nurse Facing Criminal Charges For Switching Vials Of Liquid Fentanyl With Saline
Catherine Shannon Dunton, 54, of Port St. Lucie, was charged with one count of tampering with a consumer product, according to a press statement issued on Friday by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida.
According to TCPalm.com, the incidents took place at The Surgery Center at Jensen Beach.
The indictment claims that Dunton altered the vials by taking out the fentanyl and replacing it with saline “and returned the adulterated vials to be used in medical procedures.”
Dunton allegedly switched the vials at the outpatient surgery center from February 28 to April 18 of this year, according to an inquiry carried out in August by the Florida Department of Health, WPEC-TV reported.
According to TCPalm.com, Dunton, who was recruited at the facility in 2021, allegedly altered the vials "two to three days a week."
The news release states that Dunton could be sentenced to up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 maximum fine. She might also be subject to a $250,000 maximum fine. Records indicate that she was released from federal jail after posting a $150,000 bail.
TCPalm.com wrote that Dunton's lawyer, Fort Pierce's Michael Ohle, declined to comment. One of the news source's states that an employee at The Surgery Center directed inquiries to corporate representatives in Dallas, who on Friday did not respond to calls for comment.
