Frightening Footage Shows Moment Zookeeper Gets Accidentally Trapped Inside Enclosure With Gorilla

Social media platforms are buzzing with reactions to a heart-pounding video featuring zookeepers who found themselves unexpectedly trapped inside a gorilla enclosure.

This unusual and tense situation unfolded at the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas, where a simple 'error' led to a pair of zookeepers facing a situation far closer to the zoo's inhabitants than they ever intended.

Specifically, they found themselves in an enclosure with a male silverback gorilla.

The nerve-wracking ordeal was caught on camera, with the footage making its way to TikTok thanks to Ben, identified as @ben306069.

Ben, who claimed to be the 'responding security officer' during the incident, shared the video with Fox News Digital.

The video, taken in the fall of 2023, allows viewers to see through a viewing screen as one zookeeper dashes away from a gorilla named Elmo.

Elmo, a 34-year-old silverback gorilla, is part of a species noted for their potential for 'displays of aggression and dominance including whooping, charging, chest beating, tree slapping, and less commonly, physical duels.'

This behavior is well-documented on the Virunga National Park's website.

These majestic creatures can weigh around '430 pounds (195kg)' and reach a height of 'five feet (1.5m) tall.'

The clip shows a tense standoff between Elmo and the zookeeper.

Thankfully, the confrontation ends with the zookeeper running to a door, entering it, and then shutting it behind her, thus creating a much-needed barrier between her and Elmo.

She is also seen reaching for her radio, likely to call for backup.

The video then shifts focus to another zookeeper who finds herself exposed on the opposite side of the enclosure.

The tension escalates as Elmo notices her presence. A voice in the background is heard praying for her safety: "God help her. God protect her."

As Elmo charges towards her, the zookeeper remains still for a moment before seizing an opportunity to move.

She drops her bucket and manages to sprint towards the door her colleague had just used, escaping to safety.

The video quickly gathered attention online, with many viewers sharing their interpretations and praise for how the situation was handled.

One viewer commented: "The Silverback did a great job of staying calm & giving the zookeepers space to leave. While also letting them know to leave."

The Fort Worth Zoo's marketing and public relations director, Avery Elander, informed the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that the incident was a result of 'keeper error'.

The zoo later issued a statement to People, explaining: 

"On Oct. 20, 2023, an incident led to two of our zookeepers sharing space with our 34-year-old silverback gorilla."

"Thankfully, there was no physical contact between keepers and gorilla; and all staff and animals are safe."

"Every day, the zookeepers shift the gorilla troop into their indoor habitat so that keepers can place the animals' lunch in their outdoor habitat."

"Due to keeper error, staff entered the yard unaware that the silverback was still in its habitat."
