Bragging that she has a job after refusing to check out a paying customer who is a lesbian, the Family Dollar representative argues on camera with a supportive man who is appalled at her stance on gay customers.
Gay Woman Refused Service At New Orleans Family Dollar Store And Caught It On Tape
#1 Family Dollar Cashier Refuses To Cash Out Gay Customer
A woman said she was denied service at a Family Dollar store in New Orleans after she took exception to comments made by the cashier. The Family Dollar store on the corner of Canal and Broad has always been Melissa Langford's go-to for quick shopping. But she says never again after her experience there this past Friday.
#2 Melissa Langford Couldn't Take The Hatred Any Longer
While standing in the check-out line, Melissa Langford said she overheard a cashier loudly expressing homophobic statements that she knew were being directed towards her. "The cashier was just loudly stating her opinion on her disdain for gay people," said Langford, "Eventually I spoke up because I couldn't take it anymore." But Langford says the situation only got worse. That's when she pulled out her cell phone and began taping the cashier, who then turned on a male customer who had spoken up in Langley's defense.
#3 She Posted The Storyt And Three Videos On Facebook
In a Facebook post later that day, the 34-year-old elaborated on the encounter. "It started off with the cashier loudly voicing her opinion on how much she hates gay people," she wrote. "After five or six minutes (or at least it felt like that long) of listening to her yell and preach to each customer about how ‘gay people need to get ‘the f*ck,' they got somethin' wrong in they head, *edit* that she had the right to refuse service to anyone she wants, gays are sick' etc., I started to writhe away internally."
"My mind was blown. I couldn't believe the things I was hearing this woman say," Langford said. "It's one thing if it was a customer in line being ignorant with her friends, but this is the cashier."
#4 The Damage Is Done
In the cell phone video recorded of the incident, the clerk can be heard saying, "I'm not serving them two." Langford is then heard in the video saying, "She won't serve me because I'm gay and because he doesn't like anti-gay people," as an unknown man tries to hurriedly get checked out with his purchase. Eventually, another clerk did ring up Langford and the other man, but Langford says the damage was done. "I think everybody's entitled to think what they want, but as a representative of a company, like a national chain, it's completely inappropriate and a blatant disregard for other people's feelings," she said.
#5 She Has A Job.. For Now
Langford called the store manager and was told nothing could be done about the incident. After the video and FB post was sent to Family Dollar, they issued the following statement: "We take incidents like this very seriously. We have a Code of Ethics in place that ensures inclusion for customers and associates and helps to ensure good customer care. The code specifically forbids unprofessional conduct and comments on sexual orientation, among other matters. Any activity that goes against this code is simply not how we expect our stores to do business.
"This situation is currently under investigation."
