#1 Even more advanced is this radio transmitter from Wolfenbuttel Prison. Made, unsurprisingly from radio recorder parts, such an item could either be secretly installed in a guard room to help prepare inmates for upcoming searches or as a part of a network of cell-based communication systems.

#2 Other notable items include this ladder, again from Santa Fu, which was crafted from a series of steel rails used as part of bookshelves and used as part of another failed escape attempt.

#3 These knuckledusters, which boast a padded handle made from a rasp potentially stolen from a workshop, were also discovered, this time at the Wolfenbuttel prison in Germany back in 1993.

#4 Unique immersion heater made from razor blades. Found, once again, in Santa Fu, this heater can prove useful in the creation of moonshine, helping to ferment a convicts fruit mash or juice.

#5 At the other end of the spectrum were basic tools like this saw, which was confiscated from an inmate at Santa Fu and even included a wooden handle for ease of use.

#6 Then there were the out-and-out weapons. Like this Mace, made and discovered at Santa Fu in 1997, which doubled up as a tool to help push barbwire away.

#7 Radio receivers were also constructed at Ludwigsburg prison, with inmates hiding their new technology inside big, deep books like encyclopedias.

#8 There are classics like this makeshift rope, made from bed sheets and dish cloths and measuring a whopping 16 meters in length. The “rope” in question was used in a bungled escape from the Santa-Fu’ jail in Hamburg back in May 1998 when two inmates attempted a daring breakout only for one to fall while climbing and the other to be captured on the roof of the facility’s main gate.

#9 Yet all else pails in comparison to this shotgun made from iron bedposts.Used as part of a daring breakout at a prison in Celle back in May 1984, the shotgun worked using a charge made from pieces of lead, curtain tape and match heads, which was ignited by a broken light bulb and AA batteries. In this instance, two inmates used the gun to not only take a jailer hostage but also blow out a pane of bulletproof glass before escaping by car.

#10 There’s also this incredible 4.5 metre grappling hook, which was crafted out of 13 separate segments of extension rod along with a “rope” made from leather and string.Crafted by two inmates at the Ludwigsburg Prison in 1987, this tool actually allowed the pair to climb two walls and make a daring escape, with security no doubt beefed up in the years that followed.
