Things from ancient Egypt are being discovered all the time. This massive 26 foot statue is one of them.
#1 Who was Ramses II?
King Ramses II became King of Egypt in his early 20's and ruled for 65-or-so years before his death in 1213BC. He was the 3rd ruler of the 19th Dynasty and ruled for the 2nd longest time out of all the ancient Egyptian pharaohs.
#2 The torso...
The status is 26 feet tall and is carved from quartzite. This picture is of the torso, briefly before it was recovered.
#3 Restoring the head
Egyptian workers lift parts of a statue that they think shows the famous Pharaoh Ramses II. The head of the statue was under some water in the ground at the site of his temple.
Archaeologists will now try to extract the rest of the pieces of the statue before putting it all back together.
#4 Record holding Pharaoh.
Ramses II has believed to have built more temples and had the most children out of any other Pharaoh!
#5 You can view it yourself!
Once it has been properly inspected, it is expected to move to the entrance of the Grand Egyptian Museum, which is expected to open sometime in 2018.
