A suburban Northern California family grieving the recent loss of a mother to cancer declined to decorate their home for Christmas – and was criticized for it by someone who mailed her a letter.

For Lyndia Zarra, Christmas was always a time of happiness and joy because her mother always helped her decorate her festive Vacaville, California home.

Lyndia Ives Zarra told KTLA sister station KTXL in Sacramento that she actually loves to decorate. Her mom, Cheri, hand-painted many decorations over the years, which are usually proudly displayed in the family's yard this time of year.

But Cheri passed away from cancer very recently. Due to grief over the loss of her mother, Zarra refrained from decorating this year.

Zarra, a resident of Vacaville, was shocked to receive an anonymous letter saying "it was completely unacceptable to not decorate a house for Christmas if you live on Candy Cane or Lollipop Lane."

Zarra was outraged by the letter. Zarra shared the nasty letter on the Solano County Community Awareness Facebook page and has received hundreds of messages of support.

In a Facebook post, she revealed that she did not decorate her home this year because she had just returned from three months out of state during which she cared for her terminally ill mother in the final stages of her life.

Zarra explained that whoever wrote the letter, which was supposedly signed by "Everyone," never once asked why she had decided not to decorate this year.

Zarra's post went viral, generating over 1,000 emotional reactions, nearly 600 comments, and 128 shares as of Friday morning. She received overwhelming support from Facebook commenters who were aghast at the insensitivity of her neighbors.

While the harsh letter certainly left Zarra feeling disappointed in her neighbors, who clearly lack compassion, she plans on going all out next year to honor her late mother.
