#1 Swallowed whole ... lag vomited for hours after ingesting the device

The 29-year-old lag was rushed to hospital after telling guards he had swallowed it whole.

X-rays showed the device nestling intact in his tummy.

#2 Mental health issues ... medics were forced to operate on jailbird

But attempts to remove it using probes inserted down the throat failed and the jailbird who had mental health issues needed an op.

Docs at Adelaide and Meath Hospital in Dublin reported the case to a medical journal to highlight the need for swift surgery in similar cases.

They said most swallowed objects can be retrieved with special scopes with tiny jaws on the end.

But rare cases involving whole phones need surgery.

Prison officers called an ambulance after the inmate vomited for four hours and claimed he had eaten his phone earlier in the day.

#4 Bizarre incident ... x-rays show device nestled snugly in his stomach

Medics put him to sleep and tried to yank the phone out using tiny grippers on the end of a tube fitted with a camera.

But when attempts failed, surgeons decided to open the patient up.

Surgery is rare in cases of so-called "foreign body ingestion".

Doctors urged colleagues faced with similar cases in future to get patients' consent for surgery before they put them to sleep, in case it's needed.

In a report in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports medics said: "The only case report of mobile phone ingestion we found was that of a 35-year old intoxicated male.

"A few other anecdotal reports of mobile phones lodged in the stomach exist in non-scientific literature."

Medical journals have also reported cases of people accidentally or deliberately swallowing forks, parts of tuna tins and, in one case, a crack pipe by a drug user who wanted to evade detection by police.

Most cases involve children under five who have accidentally swallowed coins, as well as patients with mental illness.
