#1 Joaquín García

Joaquín García, a 69-year-old Spanish man, is making headlines after officials discovered that he had been skipping work for over six years.

#2 They wanted to give him an award

And as funny as it may sound, he was discovered when the deputy mayor looked for him to give him a recognition for his "loyal and dedicated" work. After all, the man had been working at the same institution for over 20 years. The deputy mayor remembers what he was thinking at the moment: "Is he still there? Has he retired? Has he died?"

#3 Fined a year's salary

But things soon changed for the longtime employee, as he was investigated and fined $30,000, which is the equivalent of a year's salary after taxes.

#4 What he was supposed to do

But what kind of role did this man have as nobody noticed his absence? Joaquín García was supposed to supervise the construction of a water treatment plan. So the city council and the water company thought each other was in charge of him.

#5 Philosophy aficionado

And his reason to skip work for such a long time is quite bizarre as well. The 69-year-old man argued that he was being bullied and given a job with no actual work due to him being a socialist. But he doesn't complain, as he used the extra time to become "an avid reader of philosophy and an expert on the works of Spinoza."
