March 2016, Tiffany’s 10-year-old son Jaden was riding his bike in their West Palm Beach, FL neighborhood. He was not wearing a helmet. Jaden fell off his bike at one point, but only scraped his elbow and knee. He got up and kept on riding. “He showed no signs of trauma and continued about his day,” Tiffany wrote on Facebook. Nothing serious, right? Wrong.
Two days later, Jaden woke up with a headache and Tiffany could tell he wasn’t his usual energetic self. He refused to eat, and all he wanted to do was lay down. After closely inspecting Jaden’s body, she noticed swelling around his right temple. When she touched the spot, it was strange and squishy. She decided right then to take him to the hospital. The moment Jaden got in the car, he started vomiting.
#1 Tiffany And Jaden
In March 2016 Tiffany and her son Jaden were enjoying the day. But he was biking without a helmet. He had a fall but it didn't seem too serious, just some elbow scrapes.
#2 Headaches
Two days later Jaden started to complain about a headache and he had a knot on his temple. Tiffany decided to take him to the hospital but in the car he got a lot worse and started vomiting. The doctors said he had a 50/50 chance of surviving.
#3 Right frontotemporal craniotomy
The doctors had to perform a right frontotemporal craniotomy and remove the epidural hematoma. They also had to place a wire mesh cranioplasty on his skull. He was in surgery for 2 1/2 hours.
#4 No Permanent Damage
By some miracle Jaden had no permanent brain damage or disabilities. He made a full recovery.
#5 Bike Safety
Tiffany wants to raise awareness about the importance of safety when biking, especially wearing a helmet.
#6 Bicycle Injuries
Wearing a helmet can prevent lots of bike injuries, especially in small children. Every year about 350,000 children are rushed to the hospital from bike accidents.
