Though it's a bad habit, we're able to store a certain amount of urine in our bladder. We usually have a small amount... until it becomes an emergency! Receptors on bladder's wall signal us when we need to visit the restroom; but when we suffer, our bladder is cut off from urethra thanks to cylindrical muscles.

Urine retention happens when someone can't visit the restroom during longer periods. Due to this, you won't even be able to empty your bladder completely because the muscles will weaken. This is also an excellent starting point of bacterial infection, causing frequent urinary infections.
