My personal hangover hacks include guzzling Gatorade, carbo-loading at Panera, and spending all day in bed regretting every drink I've ever had. Once I feel better, I'm quick to celebrate with a big glass of wine. When will I learn?

As it turns out this whole time I could have avoided such an intense hangover with a one little math equation. Usually I don't like using my brain when I drink, but if it'll save me some grief in the morning, I'm happy to do it. The best part is that it's super easy! Hop over to the next page and never spend another morning in agony.

When it comes to avoiding a nasty hangover, science has proven all you need to do is follow a simple math equation. First I'll need to explain congeners. During fermentation, two byproducts are made: ethanol (the stuff that gets you feeling good) and congeners (the stuff that makes you feel bad in the morning). Congeners are found in all types of booze, but they're more prevalent in dark liquors like whiskey, brandy, and red wine. These types of alcohols also usually have more sugar which will also make you more prone to hangovers. Opting for clear or light coloured liquor like gin and vodka will help.

Then there's the water factor. We all know the feeling of waking up and chugging a gallon of water it's because alcohol makes your body severely dehydrated. Though it's not the most fun thing in the world, drinking a glass of H2O in between cocktails will help minimize your hangover.

Here's the best news: something that will make all the difference is eating. Make sure you have a filling meal before you go out and maybe have a snack when you get home. So feel free to grab some McDonald's on your way back from the bar.

So the equation goes: clear coloured liquor, plus water and food equals a tolerable morning after. Though this may not completely eliminate your hangover, it'll make it a hell of a lot better. Whoever asked when you'll use math in the future can eat their words. Ready, set, drink!
