A person has died after being sucked into a jet engine at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.
A tragic event unfolded at an Amsterdam airport when a person was fatally sucked into a jet engine.
This distressing incident was witnessed by both passengers and ground crew as the individual was drawn into the engine of a Cityhopper Embraer E190 aircraft.
The airport released a statement confirming the dreadful event:
"A horrific incident occurred today where a person became trapped in the engine of an aircraft."
They added, "Our thoughts are with the loved ones and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this incident."
The flight was scheduled to depart for Billund, Denmark, at 2.25 pm.
As of now, the identity of the individual involved has not been disclosed, and it remains unclear whether they were a passenger or an airport employee.
The plane, operated by KLM airline, was in the process of being pushed back from the gate in preparation for its journey to Denmark when the incident occurred.
Military police were quickly on the scene, and they have reported that all passengers have been evacuated from the aircraft and are receiving care.
Dutch authorities have initiated a thorough investigation to determine the specifics of how this tragic event took place.
It is known that passengers aboard the plane also saw the horrifying moment the person was pulled into the engine.
KLM, the airline conducting the flight, issued a detailed statement through a spokesperson:
"A fatal incident took place at Schiphol today during which a person ended up in a running aircraft engine. Sadly, this person has died.
"The flight concerned was KL1341 bound for Billund. We are currently taking care of the passengers and employees who witnessed the incident at Schiphol.
"The circumstances are currently under investigation."
Eyewitnesses speaking to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf recounted hearing a 'hellish noise' at the time of the incident.
Another added, "Many people saw it happen."
The Dutch minister for infrastructure, Mark Harbers, expressed his condolences: "Terrible news about a fatal accident today at Schiphol.
"My condolences go out to the relatives of the victim and the people who witnessed the accident."
The Dutch Safety Board has responded by dispatching three inspectors to lead the preliminary investigation into this tragic event.
Photos from the scene show emergency vehicles on the tarmac, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
The pilots' union VNV also issued a statement concerning the tragedy:
"Our first concern and thoughts go out to those involved and their relatives.
