A man has been arrested and jailed after punching a house maid who said that he ate a lot. His defense for the attack was that she had provoked him.
A maid in Singapore suffered serious injury after she served dessert to her boss in a way he didn’t like. She also remarked that the man ‘ate a lot’.
The Singaporean then proceeded to punch her face three times, resulting in burst blood vessels and a fractured eye socket.
The assault on Kyi Than, the maid was brought to court this week when Suriya Krishnan, the attacker plead guilty to the charge of ‘voluntarily causing hurt;.
Kyi Than was originally the employee of Krishnan’s sister in a house where Krishnan also resided.
The incident occurred during the birthday celebrations for Krishnan’s father. During the event, Krishnan had gotten drunk and had gone into the kitchen to ask Kyi Than to prepare food.
It was at this point commented that he ‘ate a lot’. The comment incensed Krishnan who was also unhappy with the way she had cut the jelly.
This is when he started scolding Kyi Than but was soon stopped by his mother. After leaving the kitchen, he soon returned to hit her across the head.
Kyi Than was hospitalised for a week after the incident. Kyi Than stopped working for the family but also went without income for months as she looked for new employment.
Krishnan has since been sentenced to six months in jail and is to pay $8500 in damages for loss of income and the injuries she had to suffer.
Tan said in a statement, “The prosecution made a case for seven months jail, a month longer than the term meted out by the judge. [But] given the apparent frequency of such offences, the need for stronger deterrence should be given due consideration."
"There may be a strong argument for penalties to be made more severe in cases of physical and mental violence directed at domestic workers.”
