#1 He Disrespected Jessica Simpson

John dated singer Jessica Simpson from 2006 to 2007, but after they split up he went on a smear campaign against her. He told Playboy in February 2010, Yeah, that girl is like crack cocaine to me. Sexually it was crazy. That's all I'll say. It was like napalm, sexual napalm." That's not a bad thing, though, right? He was basically saying that they had great sex. In fact, he continued by saying that "There are people in the world who have the power to change our values. Have you ever been with a girl who made you want to quit the rest of your life? Did you ever say, 'I want to quit my life and just f**kin' snort you? If you charged me $10,000 to f**k you, I would start selling all my s**t just to keep f**king you.'" Well. needless to say, Jessica didn't take his comments as flattering, in fact, she was offended.

#2 She Hasn't Forgiven Him For It

After John said similar things to various magazines and TV gossip shows, Jessica was furious. She went on The View in 2010 and told the ladies just how embarrassed his comments were. "I'll walk into a restaurant or something, and I notice that more men are looking at me, and I feel like they're undressing me, and that's embarrassing." When asked if she'd spoken with Mayer since the story hit, she scoffed, "Oh no, he'll never have this napalm again!" She added, "He did apologize, but at this point, it doesn't really matter." She later told Oprah Winfrey that she was disappointed and hurt and didn't need the public to know how she was in bed.

#3 He Spoke Publicly About Why He Split With Jennifer Aniston

John and Jennifer dated for one year, from 2008 to 2009. And in true Rachel Green fashion, they took a "break" briefly in between. During the "break" John went on a rant to the Telegraph about why they weren't together saying "It's the most normal thing in the world, there's no lying, there's no cheating, there's no nothing. If you guys are going to run stuff and run every lie under the sunHave somebody stand up for somebody. Have me as a man who ended a relationship." He then added, "Write that Jennifer Aniston is the smartest most sophisticated woman I've ever met. People are different, people have different chemistry, they have different lives." Long story short, he was implying that somebody cheated and it wasn't him. But nobody believed that line knowing his history.

#4 He Later Dissed Her About Their Age Difference

After Jennifer called it off completely, John told Playboy that the difference in their ages was the cause for their breakup. He told the magazine, "That woman was the most communicative, sweetest, kindest person. I'll always be sorry that it didn't last. In some ways I wish I could be with her," he said. "But I can't change the fact that I need to be 32I don't want to pet dogs in the kitchen." Jennifer was only 7 years older than John at the time. He said that he wanted to be young, wild, and free, and Aniston wanted to be serene, domestic, and private. Aniston still doesn't quite forgive Mayer for running his mouth so much after he went on TMZ and said the same things then tweeted things about her being an old lady.

#5 Taylor Swift's 'Dear John' Hurt Him

Never single, right after his split with Jennifer, he had a brief but intense relationship with Taylor Swift from late 2009 to very early 2010 after collaborating on his song "Half Of My Heart," and there's still, er, bad blood between them to this day. After he cheated on her and broke her heart, she did what she does best and wrote a song about it called "Dear John" which was squarely aimed right at him. Taylor was America's sweetheart at the time and the song was a huge hit, much to Mayers chagrin.

#6 He Blasted Back At Swift Who Had Millions Of Loyal fans

He then did an interview with Rolling Stone saying, "It made me feel terrible because I didn't deserve it. I'm pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do." He added, "I never got an e-mail. I never got a phone call. I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down. I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you've ever been, someone kicked you even lower?" However, he then went on to attack her artistically saying she wasn't that good of a singer and an OK songwriter. "As a songwriter, I think it's kind of cheap songwriting. I know she's the biggest thing in the world, and I'm not trying to sink anybody's ship, but I think it's abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, 'Wait till he gets a load of this!' That's bulls**t." Swift's fans, known as 'Swifties', bombasted the musician on social media and his sales declined.

#7 He Has Strange Attitudes Towards Women In General

When Playboy asked Mayer how many women he'd bedded since splitting with Aniston, he replied, "I'm going to say four or five. No more. But even if I said 12, that's a reasonable number. So is 15. Here's the thing: I get less a** now than I did when I was in a local band. Because now I don't like jumping through hoops." He then admitted that while dating Jennifer Aniston, he had a fling with a girl in Las Vegas named Dimples, and the 'S' was a dollar sign. He said, "If I'm with Jen and I still fuck a girl named Dimples, what does that say about Jen, who I love, or myself?" He then added, "All I wanna do is fuck girls I don't have a connection with, is that so bad?"

#8 He Used Girlfriends For The Press

Jessica Simpson's manager said that she believed the press broke them up because John was always complaining that his relationship to such a high profile celebrity was being ruined by the media and press. But Rob Shuter to The New Yorker, "We've never seen Jennifer Aniston out in public without John on her arm, same as when he was with Jessica." He recalls how John would make Jennifer stop on the street to do an interview with paparazzi. He told the magazine how John loved doing interviews himself and when he worked with Alicia Keys his publicist was very aggressive about making sure that John wanted more attention: 'John likes press, he likes to do interviews, he likes being on magazine covers.' He said that ever since his fling with Simpson he loves dating famous celebrities.

#9 He May Have Used Katy Perry Too

Mayer may have used his relationship with Katy Perry to publicize his album, Paradise Valley. The couple collaborated on his track "Who You Love," and even though he'd said he and the "Roar" songstress had a "private relationship," he had no problem toting her along on talk show appearances to promote their duet. She claims they were never romantically involved and that he used her.

#10 He Tried To Run The Interview With Perry On The Ellen Show

Their appearance on Good Morning America was pretty awkward as evidenced by the body language, but the pair fared slightly better on Ellen, where he hijacked a big portion of what was supposed to be an interview with Perry and spoke over top of her and answered all the questions. Ellen noted that she was trying to get Katy to say something but the audience and Mayer took it as a joke and just laughed.

#11 His Racially Charged Comments

Another shortsighted bit from Mayer's Playboy interview was when he dropped the N-bomb. When asked if rappers like Kanye West, with whom he collaborated on "Bittersweet," accept him, he replied, "Someone asked me the other day, 'What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?' If you really had a hood pass, you could call it a n****r pass. But I said, 'I can't really have a hood pass. I've never walked into a restaurant, asked for a table and been told, 'We're full.'" When called out, he almost immediately apologized on Twitter for using the slur, but the damage was done.

#12 He Made His Racist Remarks Even Worse

The N-bomb comment was bad, but it wasn't his only racially insensitive remark in the interview. At one point, when asked if black women "throw themselves" at him, he replied, "I don't think I open myself to it. My d**k is sort of like a white supremacist. I've got a Benetton heart and a f**kin' David Duke c**k. I'm going to start dating separately from my d**k." Yikes!

#13 His Apology Tour Backfired

After all of his racism and bad mouthing his exes, he laid low for a year or so. But he was coming out with a brand new CD and needed to promote it. He went on an "Apology Tour" where he visited talk shows and did several interviews where he was supposed to apologize but never did. He told Ellen DeGeneres in spring 2012, "I just sort of lost my head for a little while."

Days later, he told NPR's All Things Considered, "I had nothing to say I was going through a time in my life where I didn't really want to share what was going on, but I didn't want to be boring. he then shared information that his People interviews were all misinterpreted and he wasn't happy about it. He claims they used his words against him to make him look bad. The apology tour didn't go very well and his CD bombed.

#14 He Has A Weird Sense Of Humor

Mayer dabbles in standup comedy, but it hasn't made him a ton of friends. In 2009, comedian Kumail Nanjiani, who's gone on to star on Silicon Valley, told a story of Mayer bumping him off of a comedy show to do five minutes onstage and that five minutes turned into 20 minutes. When Nanjiani finally got to go onstage, Mayer reportedly heckled him and called him "Kabul" and said that "he looked like a brown guy but sounded like a white guy." He then went on to mimic handicapped people and then told an interviewer that he was out of his arena with a bunch of people who "don't usually get the girls and are jealous of the guy who does."

#15 His General TMI Habit

Within one 2010 Rolling Stone interview, readers learned about Mayer's fascination with "poop Twitters" (don't Google them), his porn habits (hint: he looks at a lot of it), obsessive masturbation, and his sex dreams (in which paparazzi make him unable to perform). He admitted at the time, "I don't know how much further I can do this before I'm a dead body on the side of the road. I mean, either I'm a total f**king nut case who can explain himself, or I'm really not crazy and I can explain myself. I don't know yet."

#16 How He Can Turn His Life Around

Every so often, Mayer will make headlines for doing something awesome, like in April 2013 when he helped build homes for veterans, or in July 2013 when he gifted a fan with a guitar, or in October 2015 when he gave away 10,000 tickets to see him perform with Dead & Company. Even as far back as 2010 when he was most reviled, the Isaac Foundation, with whom Mayer worked previously, defended the Grammy winner as a "kind, caring, and compassionate person." He even collaborated on a laundry line for charity in 2016. But aside from all that, the guy is an incredible musician with a lot going for him. He can be funny as seen in his spoof of skin care advertisements on YouTube, but he needs tokeep his nose out of the headlines and focus on his music.
