How Someone Hugs Can Mean A Lot Of Different Things

If you pay closer attention, a hug can take many forms. Some people look their partners right in the eye when they hug, or even put their hands in the other person's pockets. Believe it or not, these subtle behaviors can reveal an enormous amount about who you are as a person. If you though all people hugged the same way, you're wrong, and every hug can reveal a lot about the hugger.

#1 The Side Hug

You know this move. They tell you to get closer for a photo or just want to be seen with you. This is commonly used as a simple "polite hug." It's often shared between family members and typically has no romantic implications. This hug can be seen as offensive because the hugger is entering your personal space when it isn't warranted.

#2 The Bear Hug

This position is about deep commitment and not wanting to be apart. The classic bear hug is powerful; you use nearly all your strength to hug your partner. It's most common when you're relieved or when you haven't seen your partner in a long time.

#3 Hug From Behind

It's a very intimate hug in any setting. This hug announces that you are protecting your significant other. This is a playful hug, but it has undertones of protection because you're sheltering your partner from others. You don't want to let a good thing get away.

#4 The 'Not An Inch Closer' Hug

We all know what this means. You aren't comfortable with one another. Someone or both of you don't jive. It's possible that you don't have compatible personalities. Or, you just despise one another but are good at keeping up appearances.

#5 The Quick Hug

This hug is not about anything except a gesture to say you connected, even just briefly. A quick hug is all about politeness (unless she's got a train to catch or something). It's not romantic, so don't read into it too much. You see this one when a friend is leaving a group and everyone just slightly hugs with a "goodbye".

#6 The Flirty Hug

It's all about kinship. This hug seems friendly but lingers for an extra second or two. Also, the other person might try to pick something off your clothing or find some other way to maintain contact. It's a hug that is all about the connection of the soul. Whatever form this hug may take, maintaining eye contact is of the utmost importance.

#7 The Hug With A Pat

If you pat someone on the back while hugging them, you're trying to comfort them...or reinforce that the hug isn't romantic but just friendly. This hug isn't about physical attraction or intimacy. This is a hug you would likely give a friend.

#8 The One-Sided Hug

Ouch. This is a hug where one person's doing all the hugging. The implications are pretty obvious...one person's not feeling the love. Awkward controlling behaviors, like holding the arms into place, can be off-putting. It can also show that the two people aren't entirely comfortable with each other.

#9 The Straddle Hug

If you and your partner hug with one person in a semi-straddle (not exactly the way you're thinking), you are both sensual people. There is an incredible amount of physical attraction that can't be denied.

#10 The Hand In The Pocket Hug

When you see two people hugging like this it means they are very comfortable with one another, perhaps to the point of being in love. Not only are you comfortable with the relationship, you are relaxed. This is a powerful combination.
