October 31 is just around the corner, which means our family is on the verge of decorating our home with creepy crawlers, spooky witches and teal-colored pumpkins. If you’re stumped by the teal-colored pumpkin part, allow me to introduce you to one of the coolest campaigns this side of the full moon.
If You See A Teal Pumpkin On A Doorstep This Halloween, Here’s What It Means

Food allergies are increasingly common in the United States according to Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE). They have increased by 50 percent from 1997 to 2011. Currently, about 15 million people in the US have food allergies. They are especially common in children; about one in 13 children has a food allergy. Food allergies are particularly dangerous to teenagers and young adults, for they are the most likely to have fatal allergic reactions. Severe allergic reactions to food result in one person going to the hospital every three minutes.

The folks at Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) created the Teal Pumpkin Project after being inspired by the efforts of a mother in Tennesee. "The Teal Pumpkin Project promotes safety, inclusion, and respect for all those managing food allergies," explained Nancy Gregory of FARE. Before the Teal Pumpkin Project, most children with allergies were simply not allowed to participate in trick-or-treating but this project has changed everything. So how does it work?

According to foodallergy.org, here's how you can take part in the movement:
1. Prepare non-food treats for trick-or-treaters with food allergies.
2. Place a teal pumpkin in front of your home to indicate to passersby that you have non-food treats available.
3. Display a free printable sign or premium poster from FARE to explain the meaning of your teal pumpkin.

Participants in the Teal Pumpkin Project agree to the following pledge:
"This Halloween, I pledge to show some extra kindness to the kids I know. I'll get some non-food treats at the store, like glow sticks, bracelets, stickers and more! I will put my teal pumpkin out on proud display, on my porch, in a window, or on a bale of hay. My teal pumpkin means I support children with food allergies, because all kids deserve to have a safe, happy Halloween."

A beautiful idea to include everyone in on the Halloween festivities. The food allergy organization is truly amazing since in just two years, they were able to spread awareness in all 50 states.
After reading this, don't forget to join the teal pumpkin project and support kids with food allergies!
