On a list of dangerous situations you can put yourself in, wearing swim trunks might seem to fall incredibly far down on the list. Putting on a bathing suit generally isn't considered a risky activity, and most people do so without a second thought. This story will make you feel otherwise: Once you hear what happened to little Jack Collins, you'll never look at swim trunks the same way again.
It started off as a normal day for Jack and his mom at the hotel pool. Wanting to go for a dip, mom suited up Jack and headed out for the water. Things were going fine at first, but then Jack let out a blood-curdling scream that no parent should ever have to hear. When mom finally got to the bottom of his anguish, she was shocked to learn that his swim trunks were at the center of it all. Find out what happened, and learn what you can do to prevent it, in the story below.
#1. 5-year-old Jack Collins was swimming at the pool when the unthinkable occurred.
After a routine swim, mom removed Jack's swim trunks when he let out a blood-curdling scream.
#2. She couldn't tell what was wrong at first.
"He let out the most gut-wrenching scream I've ever heard; it's a sound no mother should ever hear," Laura Collins said in an interview.
#3. While he was playing in the water, the netting inside the swim shorts had wrapped around his penis.
Mom ran to the front desk of their hotel, trying to get a pair to cut his shorts off of his body, but she couldn't do it on her own.
#4. Eventually, they had to take the little tyke to the hospital.
The netting situation was so severe that they could only trust a doctor to handle the delicate scenario.
#5. Here's what happened inside the shorts.
As you can see, this must have been an incredibly painful situation for the little guy. Most people probably weren't even aware that something like this could happen.
#6. However, the doctors told Jack's mom that it wasn't the first time they'd seen something like this.
Another boy had come into the hospital with a similar situation, just a few weeks earlier.
#7. Collins and the doctors wanted to make sure people know that this is a risk.
In fact, they even encouraged parents to remove netting from the swim trunks to prevent this from occurring.
#8. The company that produced the trunks even apologized.
#9 Most swim trunks are made with this kind of mesh, leading us to wonder if it might be better to start producing them without it.
"Whilst we will be conducting an investigation with the manufacturer we would like to assure our customers that our swim shorts meet the industry standards required for the mesh lining," the company said in a statement
#10. But at the end of the day, we're just glad little Jack is okay.
It's one of those freak things that no one should ever have to deal with, but luckily, they came out on the other side unscathed.
