Ecuador's Huaorani tribe, located in the Amazon, has distinctive customs and physical adaptations, like their unique feet, due to their tree-climbing way of life, as captured in photos by Pete Oxford.
Indigenous People Who Climb Trees Regularly To Survive Have Seen Major Changes To Their Feet
A tribe in Ecuador has shared incredible images of their way of life.
The Huaorani tribe is an Indigenous group that resides in Ecuador's Amazon region.
There are 4,000 or more individuals living in this isolated region of the world, according to reports, and they speak a language unique to themselves that no one else understands.
The Aboriginal people hunt and gather food from the land; they even scale trees to catch monkeys.
Their bodies—especially their feet—have started to adjust to their lifestyle.
Pete Oxford, a British conservation photographer, captured photographs of a man whose feet were completely transformed to resemble those of someone you may find anywhere on Earth.
His biggest toe appears to be pointing more inward in the picture than straight forward, giving his foot a more curved appearance on the inside.
But it's thought that they gradually adjust to having feet like this; they are not born this way.
Since the toes of the other tribe members are likewise more dispersed, climbing trees should be a little bit simpler.
In addition, they seem to be nearly flat.
According to the history dedicated X page @historyinmemes, there have even been reports that some members of the tribe have six fingers and toes.
"Due to their longstanding practice of tree climbing, a crucial skill for their way of life, the Huaorani people have experienced physical adaptations in their feet," a post on the social media page reads.
"The tribe primarily relies on hunting monkeys and other small game using spears and blow guns as a major food source.”
"The combination of a limited gene pool, constant exposure to the challenging environment, and the necessity of climbing trees has resulted in the flattening of their feet."
Some Indigenous tribes isolate themselves from outside influences, however, the Huaorani tribe seems to be fairly hospitable, as seen by the fact that Oxford was invited into their world to shoot pictures.
They claim to have been in communication with non-tribal people for sixty years, although the tribe has been around for hundreds of years.
They even permitted an American YouTuber, known on the platform as xiaomanyc, to accompany them on one of their hunts.
Xioama joined the tribe and participated fully, including dressing in his birthday suit as they do.
The multilingual YouTuber seems to have been able to communicate with the Huaorani tribe in Spanish, despite the fact that they speak their own language.
Xiaoma continued, calling the event "one of the craziest things I've ever done."
