Residents of a usually quiet apartment complex in Rio de Janeiro were left in disbelief after firefighters uncovered a shocking scene inside one of the units.

The emergency call, which came in because of a strange and persistent smell, has since turned into a deeply tragic story that’s gained widespread attention both locally and online.

According to reports from Brazilian media outlets summarized by PEOPLE, firefighters were called to an apartment in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood after concerned neighbors noticed a strong, unusual odor coming from behind a closed door.

The smell had been lingering for days, prompting residents to reach out to authorities for help. When the fire brigade arrived on Friday, October 10, what they found inside would soon become the center of a police investigation.

Inside the apartment were the bodies of 33-year-old model and social media influencer Lidiane Aline Lorenço and her 15-year-old daughter, Miana Sophya Santos, whose deaths have since left friends, family, and fans heartbroken.

The Civil Police released a statement saying: "A forensic examination was conducted at the scene and found no evidence of assault."

"The bodies were autopsied, but it has not yet been possible to determine the cause of death. Further tests will be performed."
