A man took to Reddit to ask if he was being unethical by taking a negotiated pay raise at his current role after being accused of doing so by the recruiter that was handling his case.
Infuriated Recruiter Accuses Employee of Unethical Pay Negotiation After He Takes Better Offer At Current Job
It's enough that we have bosses breathing down our necks that this particular man also found himself the target of the ire of the recruiter that had reached out to him.
A Reddit user said that he had been trying to get a raise at his current role but had been denied one. He made it clear to his boss that he would be looking for a position elsewhere.
The search didn't last long as he was quick to land another job that offered him 15% more than what he was getting at his current role. His boss however asked him to wait as he reached out to the higher ups to find a solution.
Ultimately, his current boss was able to match the pay that the other place was offering and after weighing his options OP decided to stay at his current role with the negotiated pay raise.
When he notified the recruiter that he had been working with, she was furious.
She accused his actions as a ploy to get a raise at his current role and said it was 'unethical' to have used their services that way. She said that he had wasted her time.
OP was taken aback by that response and didn't say anything to the recruiter. His wife supported him but he was still wondering if the reaction was warranted.
Commenters were quick to clarify to OP that he had done nothing wrong and that the recruiter was probably mad that she would not be receiving a commission.
Others echoed that sentiment telling him that he should care for himself first and not the recruiter.
They also pointed out that what he did was in no way 'uhnethical'.
Others also added that while they agreed OP wasn't in the wrong, they questioned his decision to stay at a place that had not given him a raise before this point.
