In the 2020 yearbook published, under the listings of names one of the students was ignorantly named a racial term instead of his real name. The Indiana high school is facing criticism over such a shameful incident while the school has assured that the yearbook matter is under the control of students and an investigation is underway.
A high school in Indiana is under fire and going through investigation after it listed one of its students in the yearbook as 'black guy.'
Brown County High School, a public school in Nashville (approximately 50 miles south of Indianapolis) published its yearbook with the list of students, 2020 yearbook listing a student on the boy's basketball team by the racial term instead of by his name.
According to CNN affiliate WRTV, the student in question has not been publicly identified and appears to be the only black person playing in the team photo.
Taking to Facebook Live in a recent video, Brown County school superintendent Laura Hammack apologized for the caption and ensured that the yearbook is taken care of by the students.
School superintendent Hammack says that an investigation is underway and the incident is a violation of the district's nondiscrimination policy and that the school district intends on reprinting the yearbook, with the district itself taking on the added cost of the recall and reprint.
Hammack stated:
"This has been a hard day, but what is most important is that this has been a really hard day for a student and for a family.
"We will work hard to make sure that a student and a family who are experiencing what they're experiencing today don't need to experience the same feelings moving forward.
"I just commit to our school community that we will be relentless in making this right and making this a moment that we can certainly look back on and one day say we're doing better."
She further added: "As an educator, my only response that I know to do is to dig in, to learn more, and to use resources to be able to advance our understanding and awareness so that we can do the same for our students."
According to state data, there were 577 students enrolled at Brown County High School in the 2019-20 school year, over 92% of whom were white/caucasian. However, state data also indicates that there were no students who identified as black or African-America enrolled at the school last year.
