ISIS Proves How Stupid They Really Are After Social Media Post
#1
In an effort to spread further fear by showing how deeply rooted Islamist extremists are embedded in regular society ISIS sponsored an online campaign of jihadist supporters posting a picture of them holding a piece of paper with their rhetoric while standing in public.
#2
What they didn't know is that people have gotten real good at finding specific locations based off land marks in pictures.
#3
Elliot Higgins, with the help of other online investigators, were able to cross examine these pictures to determine the locations. Using CCTV footage and knowledge of land marks in the area they were able to geo-locate where the pictures were taken. It really didn't take long since the terrorist supporters didn't really try to hide at all.

Higgins gave a little more in-depth explanation how they do this: "We crowd-sourced the answer on Twitter, so it was really a group effort. For London it was basically a local IDing the location, then for Holland several people noted the lamp posts were distinct enough to narrow down the locations, then it was just a matter of looking.

[In the] Paris photo the Suzuki sign was ID'd, then it was basically searching for Suzuki dealers in Paris and checking the locations on Google Street view."

Hopefully the Jihadi supporters keep this up so that the police can find them as soon as possible.
