Johnny Depp Set To Play A Role As Playboy King Louis XV In Upcoming Film "La Favorite"

The French period piece "La Favorite," in which Johnny Depp will appear, will be his first movie since his defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Along with Maiwenn Le Besco, who will direct and play the lead role of Jeanne du Barry, King Louis' mistress, Depp will portray King Louis XV.

Le Besco has had prior success as the director of acclaimed movies, including "Polisse" and "Mon Roi." Depp will star in his first French-language movie, which will begin shooting this summer and be released in 2023.

Depp gets an upfront beginning price of $20 million for any part. However, the film's budget is unknown.

With "La Favorite," Depp will make a comeback after being banned by most of Hollywood as a result of Heard's allegations of domestic abuse.

In 2020, a British judge determined that 12 of the 14 violent instances Heard claimed to have witnessed were "substantially true." As a result, Warner Bros. compelled Depp to withdraw from the "Fantastic Beasts" franchise.

However, the actor looks to be reviving interest after winning his own $15 million defamation lawsuit against Heard.

After receiving a $301 million offer from Disney, Depp is allegedly negotiating to feature in a further "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie and return as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Depp apparently said in jest that he wouldn't return to the "Pirates" franchise even if he were given $300 million, which prompted Disney to make him an offer for $1 million more.

In 2020, his most recent movie, "Minimata," which is about the war photographer W. Eugene Smith, came out.

The film was a financial disaster with a worldwide box office of just $1.7 million and an estimated $11–13 million in costs. According to his agency, Depp received $3 million for his part after "the financing became shaky."

The announcement comes as Netflix's subscriber base and value have plummeted this year. 

To revive interest in its productions, Netflix has reached an agreement with French film guilds to invest about $40 million in French films.

Depp and the French singer Vanessa Paradis have a daughter, age 23. In addition to becoming an actor, Depp's daughter Lily-Rose Depp was born in the affluent Paris neighborhood of Neuilly-sur-Seine.

Also featured on the Netflix front page is Lily-Rose. In the 2019 Netflix film The King, the young actress played Timothee Chalamet's opposite role.

The major streaming service said it anticipates losing millions of customers this year, and its stock price has fallen by more than 70% since its start.

Netflix stock was valued at more than $600 per share in January, but that price has significantly dropped, and shares were only being traded at about $180 in June.

Due to the decline in value and income, Netflix was compelled to reduce expenses, which resulted in the decision to terminate hundreds of staff members and employees.
