It is an unbelievable image: the infant lies thrashing in his cot. His legs shake uncontrollably - he is going through withdrawal! His mother is severely drug addicted and had even taken strong opiates during her pregnancy. The drugs had passed through the bloodstream into the unborn baby, thus the little one was dependent even as he came into the world. He is only one of the victims of the epidemic in the USA. Due to the increasing spread of cheap drugs and the abuse of prescription drugs, the United States are facing a frightening wave of health and social problems. And the victims are again the most vulnerable: the young children.

Every 19 minutes a new child is born in America, who suffers from the so-called "Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome", infant withdrawal symptoms. This can end in death for many children, and while most babies are showered with love in their first few months, for these addicted infants life is full of torture.

Through tears, this mother tells how she took another hit of heroin when she went into labor. "I sat in the bathroom just before I gave birth, and injected myself with heroin. Nothing matters except for getting high." The little Jacoby has survived, but his mother has lost her custody. Since then she has managed to get her addiction under control and given birth to a second child - without addiction.

I hope that other parents take this to heart and at least for the wellbeing of their children manage to come clear of their drug addictions. In most states there is no law that requires doctors to report these cases. Parents are therefore able to take their children home, even though they can barely look after themselves. Check out the video on the next page to see just how terrible it is:
