Keanu Reeves Reveals He’s Been Married To Winona Ryder For Almost 30 Years

Keanu Reeves is a very private person in real life and is definitely not the one who displays his relationship for the world to see and comment on.

However, fans and followers were left shocked after Reeves revealed in 2021 that he was still married to Winona Ryder. It had been 29 years years of marriage.

“So I guess we’re married“

Well, the wedding was not set in a conventional manner with the typical white dress and bouquet and wedding cake. But they had a ceremony with people all around them. Technically, the people were the entire film crew and of course, the wedding didn't happen in real life but it was during the filming of 1992’s, “Dracula”.

“We did a whole take of a marriage ceremony with real priests,” Reeves said. He was then asked whether they are still married to this day, and Reeves responded: “Winona says we are. Coppola says we are. So I guess we’re married, under the eyes of God.”

The director of the “Dracula” movie was Francis Ford Coppola. He wanted the scene to be as realistic as possible and thought using a real church as the setting would be aesthetically pleasing. According to the director, authenticity was key. “Having the real wedding ceremony as it might be in that religion [Greek Orthodox Christianity] would be beautiful,” he said.

In fact, he even admitted that the scene where the characters got married could be more legit than people thought. “This is pretty authentic and I think very beautiful, because we actually did the ceremony and had the priest do the ceremony,” Coppola said. “So in a sense, when we were all done, we realized that Keanu and Winona really are married as a result of this scene and this ceremony.”

“I think we’re married in real life“

Entertainment Weekly interviewed the two when they were doing media coverage for the 2018 movie, “Destination Wedding,” They were curious about their relationship. Ryder is convinced that God thinks they are married because of the vows they took. Even if it was for a scene in a movie. “So I think we’re married,” she said. “No, I swear to God, I think we’re married in real life. In that scene, Francis used a real Romanian priest. We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So, I think we’re married.”

I guess it is never too late to learn that the duo even had a crush on each other for a while, but, neither acted on those feelings nor knew that it was mutual.

Keanu and Winona are old friends

"Dracula” was not the first or last film they acted in together.

They also starred in “Destination wedding” but they’ve also co-starred in others like, “A Scanner Darkly,” and “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.” Regardless of this, the long-time friends share a professional relationship too and both have never been romantically linked.

As a matter of fact, Sandra Bullock is another one of Reeve’s good friends. She shared her opinion in a December issue of Esquire magazine.

Bullock thinks that she and Reeves would have made a good couple and survived where others hadn’t. However, they did not give each other the chance.

“Keanu’s a guy who, I feel like, is friends with every woman he’s ever dated,” said Bullock.

“I don’t think there’s anyone who has something horrible to say about him. So maybe we could have survived. I don’t know. But we didn’t have to survive anything.”

She added: “We just get to grow up together on parallel roads and tip our hats and meet for a dinner and try to work together. And the longer time goes on, the more in awe I am of the human being.“

Finally, she justifies her actions by saying: “Would I have been able to say that if he had dumped me and made me angry? Probably not.”
