A mom who was once described as “fit and healthy” shared the symptoms she overlooked before learning she had terminal bowel cancer. Krystal Maeyke was just 39 years old when she died from the disease, but before her passing, she spoke openly about what she wished she’d noticed sooner.

Her life changed overnight on May 30, 2023, when doctors delivered the devastating news that her illness had already reached stage four. The active mom from Australia said she first experienced “stabbing pains that brought me to my knees” but dismissed them as nothing more than food intolerance or digestive issues.

Because she led a healthy lifestyle, worked out regularly, and ate well, she didn’t think her symptoms were serious. That assumption, she later realized, delayed the diagnosis of her rapidly spreading cancer.

At first, Krystal tried to manage the pain on her own, thinking it would pass. But as the discomfort grew worse, she was rushed to Alice Springs Hospital, where doctors began running tests to find out what was happening.

By that point, the pain was unbearable. Reports say that even morphine couldn’t ease it, and only fentanyl provided temporary relief. It was during this hospital stay that she finally learned the truth about her condition — and that her cancer had already spread far beyond her bowel.

Her experience serves as a sobering reminder that being physically active or eating healthy doesn’t always mean you’re safe from hidden illness.

Krystal later reflected on the early signs she ignored, realizing how easily she had mistaken them for something minor. She spoke candidly about how those overlooked symptoms turned out to be much more serious than she ever imagined.

"I thought it wasn't anything sinister. That's is why it became advanced cancer and spread all through my abdomen, liver, ovaries and starting from my bowel," Krystal said, recalling how long she went before understanding what was really happening inside her body.

"I felt each stabbing pain, when it was spreading in my bowel with a tumour almost blocking my bowels. I felt the lump appear and was told it may just be a lymph node. That was the tumour I was feeling."

"And as it spread during that time, I felt it reach my ovaries as the stabbing pains continued. Never in a million years would I think that I would have this cruel disease in my body trying to kill me. Cancer hurts."

Krystal passed away on July 5 at the age of 39. Her loved ones shared in a statement that she “was surrounded by love and completely pain-free” during her final moments, bringing some comfort to those who followed her journey online.

Even as her health declined, Krystal continued posting on TikTok, using her platform to encourage others to take even small symptoms seriously and get checked early. Her videos reached thousands, inspiring people to listen to their bodies rather than dismissing unusual pain or changes.

She also launched a GoFundMe page before her death to raise money for her young son, Maison, ensuring that he would be cared for and supported after she was gone. The campaign continues to receive donations as people honor her legacy.
