Huge snakes are a common sight in Indonesia, which is why some people will get to have an encounter with one. Robert Nababan, who works as a security guard in an oil plantation in Riau, Sumatra, happens to be one of those people.

Robert Nababan was driving on a moped in Riau Province on the Indonesian island of Sumatra when he came upon the snake blocking traffic as it tried to edge across a road, according to local media.

Police say the 37-year-old tried to catch the giant python and stuff it in a gunny sack. But the huge serpent fought back and bit him on his left arm, nearly severing it from his body.

Local reports said there was a desperate struggle before villagers rushed to his aid, hitting the snake with a log and saving his life.

But miraculously Mr. Nababn managed to win the combat and killed the snake.
Speaking from his hospital bed he said: “I tried to catch it. It bit my arm, and we wrestled for a while.”
He suffered deep lacerations to his left arm and hand.

Local police chief Sutarja told AFP that another security guard and several locals helped Nababan fight off the reptile and one of them hit it with a log.

The snake was eventually killed by villagers and its body displayed by hanging it from a clothesline.

The snake was likely a reticulated python, the world’s longest reptile measuring up to 23 feet and capable of eating fully grown pigs, and occasionally, humans.

Nababan was then rushed to a hospital in a neighboring town for treatment.

Hungry locals killed the snake and displayed its body in the village before dicing it up, frying it and feasting on it.
