Back in 1991, Romanian farmer Vasile Gorgos left home for what was meant to be a simple business journey. Instead, he shocked everyone by returning three decades later in the very same clothes he wore when he left.
The strange case of a man who disappeared for thirty years after a "routine trip" and then came back wearing the same clothes remains unsolved even today.
In 1991, cattle farmer Vasile Gorgos, then living in a quiet village in eastern Romania, set out on what should have been just another work trip. He had even bought a return ticket, planning to be back soon. But when he never came home, his worried family alerted the police.
Despite a search being launched, no trace of him was found. As years went by with no answers, his loved ones eventually assumed he had passed away. They even held memorial services in his honor. Then, in 2021, Vasile shocked everyone by suddenly reappearing at the gate of his old home, alive and dressed exactly as he had been on the day he vanished.
Family members said that a car pulled up outside their house and dropped Vasile off. He stepped out, confused, but unmistakably him — and still wearing the same clothes from 1991.
The vehicle quickly sped away before anyone could note down its license plate. Vasile, for his part, couldn’t remember where he had been or explain what had happened over the past thirty years.
When they checked his belongings, they found his old ID still in his pocket and the same train ticket he had used the day he first disappeared.
A YouTube series called Cold Case Detective later reported on the case, sharing details from doctors who examined him after his return. They were stunned to find that, at his age, he was in surprisingly good condition.
The program noted: "He was described as being in very good health aside from some neurological issues which were said to be nothing out of the ordinary for his age."
Vasile could recall certain details, such as being born in 1928, that his wife had already passed away, and that he was the son of a well-known merchant. Yet he could not recognize the very children he had left behind in 1991, which deeply saddened his family.
His son later told local reporters: "We don't understand him. He doesn't know what he's saying. He talks to us about the period when he was involved in raising and selling cows. We ask him one thing, and he tells us another."
"Who knows where he has been, who kept him, maybe he was forced to work… who knows what kind of life he led?" Strangely, Vasile repeatedly insisted that he had "always been home".
Theories quickly spread among amateur sleuths online about what might have happened. Some suggested he may have chosen to walk away from his old life. A podcast called Gone, But Never Forgotten even speculated he had "ditched his life and his family".
If that theory were true, then perhaps Vasile had "wanted to make amends with his former family before he passed away."
