#1 Electronic cigarettes are fast becoming a part of modern society but are they really the ‘safe’ alternative to conventional fags? By the looks of things they are in terms of toxicant comparisons but can a regular stogie blow up and cause the user serious burns? No.

#2 Kevin Woodward has become the latest victim of one of the battery-powered devices. The father-of-two was charging his Eleaf iStick overnight when it exploded by the side of him as he slept. He revealed:“I woke up and the right hand side of my face was on fire. It felt like someone was using a blowtorch on me. I didn’t have a clue what was happening – it was like a horror movie. My son had only got out of the bed to get into his own bed two hours before. When I realised what was happening I managed to slam a pillow on top of the fire, opened the windows and got the kids out of the house.”

#3 Kevin was taken to hospital to be treated for the horrific burns that he endured to his face, arms and hands and is likely to need skin grafts. While doctors have warned that it will take at least six months for the scarring and redness to heal.

The popularity of e-cigs seems to be outpacing scientific data and this incident highlights that clearly further research needs to be done, and fast.

Kevin has complained to the Chinese makers of his Eleaf iStick who were not available for comment. For now he is recovering at Whiston Hospital, Merseyside on the specialist burns until. We wish him a speedy recovery.
