A British visitor who infuriated cartel members by snorting cocaine from Pablo Escobar's grave was jailed and vowed never to visit Colombia again.
Man Jailed For Snorting Cocaine From Pablo Escobar's Grave
A British tourist who attempted to smuggle cocaine into the UK and snorted it off Pablo Escobar's grave was sentenced.
In 2018, Steven Semmens visited the South American nation and documented his horrific deeds on Facebook Live. The 39-year-old claimed he pulled the offensive joke as a result of a bet among friends, but he had no idea things would become out of control.
At the time, the infamous video was circulated on social media. It shows Semmens snorting the white substance "for a laugh" while kneeling next to Escobar's grave and paying with a $5 note.
Semmens shaved his head in an effort to conceal his identity after the video went viral. His efforts were, however, short-lived as he was caught by the police and expelled from Colombia.
Later, he admitted receiving death threats and said it made getting a job "awkward."
"I just thought it would be a laugh," he said at the time. "I didn’t think it would go this far."
"I was drunk at the time. I’ve been bombarded with threats that I’m going to get skinned."
At Swansea Crown Court, he and four other accused persons Botto, Shane White, and Ieuan Emlyn Williams—were now given prison terms totaling more than 52 years.
In South Wales, they had the plan to smuggle drugs between April 2020 and August 2021.
They had engaged in the distribution and trafficking of cocaine, according to Judge Huw Rees.
He said: "It goes without saying, but it seemingly needs to be said, sheer greed led you to profit from selling an insidious Class A drug without a thought or a care about the misery or danger being inflicted on others. To put it in short form - you were in it for the money and you must pay the consequences for your avarice".
