A 20-year-old Swiss man was rushed to the hospital ER after a bizarre accident happened to him while masturbating.

The unnamed patient whose identity has been kept anonymous suffered a lung injury usually caused by rigorous exercise or violent coughing.

I mean what?

The man got hospitalized for 3 days and even spent a night in ICU as the air had escaped from his lung and became lodged in his ribcage, according to the case report in the journal Radiology Case Reports.

According to the journal, the patient came to the A&E after experiencing breathlessness and chest pain while he was performing the act in his bed.

As he reached the hospital, the doctors were made well aware of the fact that he has done a number on himself. His face was swollen and crunching noises were coming from his neck down to his arms.

Doctors immediately diagnosed him with ‘spontaneous’ pneumomediastinum (SPM), which is the leakage of air from the lung to the ribs.

It is the first case reported due to masturbation, even though a similar case has been noted during sex.

In this medical emergency, the air got trapped and had spread in his body and even made its way to his skull. In more extreme cases, the trapped air can cause a collapsed lung.

He was treated at Cantonal Hospital in Winterthur, with doctors calling his case ‘unusual’.

As the unknown man came to the hospital, he told the medics that he experienced sharp chest pain while masturbating.

As doctors took his history, the patient denied taking any drugs or smoking and also confirmed that he didn't take part in any strenuous exercise that led to severe coughing or this injury. This lead the doctors to label the case ‘spontaneous’.

In the report, doctors said: “Predisposing factors are history of smoking, acute asthma and recreational drug use (especially cocaine and heroin).

“Except for history of mild, non-acute asthma no inciting factors were noticed in our patient.

“There are only a few reports of SPM related to sexual activity and we could not find any cases associated with autoeroticism, which makes our case unusual.”

The man was discharged on the 4th day and one can only hope that he never experiment with this stint ever again.
