Man Watches Wife Die In Escalator Trying To Save Their 2-year-old Son

The 30-year-old mother, identified as Xiang Liujuan, was going up a floor at the Anliang Department in Jingzhou, China, when the incident happened. Together with her son, Xiang used an escalator, but when they were about to reach the floor, they were greeted with a grim warning from the staff.

It turned out the escalator was dysfunctional and that the maintenance crew forgot to screw the footplate of the escalator tightly. By the time Xiang reached the floor, the escalator's footplate gave in. Just before Xiang was about to fall into the chasm, she managed to throw her two-year-old son away from danger.

Xiang was still hanging onto what remained of the footplate while the staff tried to pull her into safety, but after a few seconds of struggling, Xiang fell into escalator.

Xiang's husband was inside the premises of the shopping mall but was not with them when the escalator incident happened.

It took four hours for Xiang's body to be recovered from the faulty machinery.
