This debate, famously spotlighted by Quentin Tarantino in his 1993 film "Reservoir Dogs," persists over three decades later, showing just how deeply entrenched and divisive the issue of tipping remains.

The conundrum isn't just about whether to tip; it's about how much to tip.

When faced with exceptional service, does one feel compelled to leave a generous tip, or is sticking to the standard 12 percent the norm, regardless of the service quality?

The rise of social media has thrown a global spotlight on this debate, showcasing instances from around the globe where either the server or the customers seem to be justified or at fault.

Yet, despite all the discussion, the debate doesn't seem to move forward, remaining in a perpetual state of contention.

One particular TikTok video, shared by user Gladys_Nicole, has stirred up this ongoing debate.

In her video, which has amassed over 1.5 million views, she commends a restaurant manager for his bold approach to ensuring a waitress received a tip from some customers.

According to Gladys, the customers in question had been at the restaurant for several hours, enjoying multiple beers and playing pool.

Though the exact words exchanged between the manager and the three men weren't clear in the video, Gladys claims the manager insisted they couldn't leave without tipping the waitress.

The video sparked a wide range of reactions on social media, with opinions sharply divided.

"Oh you mean the money HE and HIS COMPANY should be paying her?? Tipping culture is ridiculous. Properly pay waiters and waitresses already," commented one user, critiquing the practice of tipping as a flawed system.

Another user argued in favor of tipping, stating: "When you don't tip your servers or bartenders, they are quite literally paying out of their own pocket for you to come out and have a good time. Come on. Be better people."

A third person offered a cynical take, suggesting, "What's really going manager POV: 'We do not and will not give them a raise so that is where customers come in so I need you to do your part now'" highlighting the perceived expectation for customers to compensate for employers' shortcomings.

Meanwhile, a fourth comment noted the paradox of spending habits: "I love how people will be willing to pay 30% more for food rather than tip a server 20%."

Finally, a fifth commenter questioned the broader system at play: "I still don’t understand how in America we set it up that the customers pays the workers salary? Tipping isn’t a thing anywhere but here. It makes no sense. It’s the business's responsibility."

This TikTok video and the ensuing debate highlight the complexities and divided opinions surrounding the practice of tipping.

It raises questions about fairness, responsibility, and cultural norms.
