#1 Research & Development

The President's limousine is the centerpiece of his motorcade, and you've most likely seen footage and images of this vehicle moving through the streets of different cities. But the Presidential limo is more than just a run-of-the-mill limo. There is actually a lot of research and development that goes into designing and building the presidential car.

The car used for President Trump's Inauguration is estimated to have been in development for several years. General Motors has spent well over $15 million in development costs alone.

#2 A Car That's Also A Tank

So what does that $15 million in research and development give you? Well, the Presidential limo, aka "The Beast" is more of a tank than a car. The Beast boasts 18 inch thick armored doors, glass than can stop a .44 magnum bullet, a body made up of five inches of military grade armor, and armor floor plates that are designed to protect the President from grenades or bombs.

The Beast also sports a specially designed gas tank that holds a unique foam that seals up if it ever gets punctured.

#3 The Cost

With all that R&D, you can imagine that the Presidential limousine is quite costly. With all the amenities and special armor, the car costs around $1.5 million per car. That doesn't even include the cost of gasoline, which is very costly since the car only get 4 miles to the gallon.

#4 Fast & Furious

It's heavy, eats up gas, and can only reach up to 60MPH in 15 seconds. But the Secret Service makes up for the Beasts performance. You've seen the many walking beside the vehicle but there is also a specially trained SS driver behind the wheel. That's not any regular chauffeur driving around the President. Special driving courses ensure that this Secret Service agent can maneuver the car in any situation.

#5 Never Just One

You already learned that each limo cost over $1.5 million, but there are an estimated 12 different Presidential limousines. If you ever watched a motorcade, you've noticed there are a few of the limos in the formation. These can be used to carry other VIPs but are usually just decoys. They move around in the motorcade so that any would-be assassin finds it difficult to determine which limo the President is actually in.

#6 Always Sent Ahead

No matter where the President is traveling, the motorcade is sent ahead thanks to the military. The Beast and any accompanying vehicles and Secret Service are sent ahead aboard an aircraft carrier and flown to the destination and awaiting the Presidents arrival.

#7 Size Matters

If you've seen a few motorcades before, then you may have noticed that they are not all equal. This is because each scenario is a little different and may require a change up in route or the number of vehicles included. This means that in more dangerous situations, the bigger the motorcade. The smallest motorcade ever was 10 vehicles in size and the biggest was 50 vehicles that included motorcycles, SUVs and a few limousines.

#8 Always Watching

Every Presidential motorcade has a lot of Secret Service Agents involved, whether you actually see them or not. Obviously, their main job is keeping watch and a sharp lookout, but they also listen and scan for threats. They normally listen to the airwaves for cellular chatter and possible threats to the President.

This was demonstrated in 1996 when agents picked up on the words 'marriage' and 'bridge' while escorting President Bill Clinton in the Philippines. Knowing that 'marriage' was often a terrorist code word for 'attack' they diverted the motorcade. A later search of the bridge proved to find explosives taped to the structure that the President would have traveled.

#9 Serious Firepower

While it looks like something out of Grand Theft Auto 5, this machine gun is actually installed in the back of several of the Beasts and used in many Presidential motorcades. Just watch the next motorcade to see if you notice the one with no agents jumping out of it. That is the one sporting this six-barreled Gatling gun that can fire thousands of rounds per minute.

#10 Heavy Artillery

Of course, the other agents are always carrying some serious firepower themselves, including Glocks and at least 4 hidden handguns and grenades. However, it's this guy in the back of the Beast that has the final word in any situation.

#11 Just A Touch Of James Bond

While it is armored from end to end, the beast also has some pretty amazing additions you'd expect to find in 007's sweet ride. It has night vision cameras, tear gas squirters, pepper spray grenades, and fire-fighting equipment all as standard features. The car can also survive a chemical attack thanks to having it's very own oxygen supply! Of course, there is always that touch of elegance with the separate reclining leather back seats.

#12 His Safety Is Important

So, rest assured, that while the world is going crazy outside, at least the President can ride in comfort and safety.
