Brielle Garrison was born without eyes. The rare condition is known as anopthalmia. Dr. Lee Friedman says he hasn't seen anything like it in his 22 years in the field.

The condition affects one in every 5,300 babies born in the United States, or about 780 babies a year. The cause of anopthalmia is unclear, but Friedman says it's not genetic.

"It's a sporadic mutation," said Friedman. "It's not hereditary."

Brielle's grandmother admits that it wasn't easy accepting the little one at first.

"For a baby to be born with no eyes is just so cruel, and because my daughter's 15, it was just mind boggling that such a thing could happen," said Lori Garrison.

Brielle will have to have several surgeries to prevent her face from becoming deformed. Still, her mother Taylor expects to treat her baby girl just like she would any other child.

"I'm going to treat her like she was born just as any other baby, because that's how she is," said Taylor Garrison. "That's how I see her."

The Garrisons hope that by sharing their story, they can raise awareness about anopthalmia to encourage more scientific research and studies.
