A mom from Indiana left her two young kids in the car in parking lot at Community Hospital North, while she went to a job interview. The kids were so cold they were freezing and stepped into the building to ask for help. The woman in question faces criticism by some but also received sympathy from the moms out there as it was pointed out that she was looking for a job so she must have been desperate also people asked about the absentee father.
Mom Under Fire For Leaving Children Outside In Freezing Car
#1 Left Her Kids In Freezing Car
The mom reportedly left her two small kids aged 7 and 4 freezing in the car for 80 minutes while she went in for a job interview. The kids were so cold that they stepped into the building at the front desk, they were shivering and were pale with cold.
#2 Kids Were Freezing And Walked Into The Building For Help
The kids walked up to the front desk and asked for help. According to the police, the temperature outside was 5 degrees so leaving kids in a freezing car was definitely not a good idea. Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine said, "No matter what temperature it is, it’s always a bad idea to leave young children in a car by themselves."
The unnamed mother insisted that she left the car running throughout her interview but the authorities noted the windows were all frosted and one officer even checked the temperature of the car with help of laser thermometer and found it to be just 10 degrees.
#3 Experts Say Leaving Kids In Cold Weather Is As Dangerous As Leaving Them In A Hot Vehicle
Experts say leaving children in a locked car in extreme cold weather is as bad as leaving them in a hot vehicle. Last summer, Sgt. Perrine and Wayne Township Fire Captain Mike Pruitt experimentally locked themselves in a car for approximately 40 minutes to show the dangers of leaving kids in locked cars.
#4 Do Things The Safe Way
Sgt Perrine says, "Hypothermia sets in instantly. As soon as you get in these cold temperatures, in a matter of minutes your body goes into a hypothermic state and it can be detrimental to anyone, especially a child. Take the children inside with you. I know finding a babysitter is not always an option, but take them inside. It’s not always convenient, but safety isn’t always convenient and you have to make sure you do things the safe way."
#5 Is She Really Guilty?
Though the mother in question has not been arrested she has been reported to Child Protective Services. The news was also updated on Facebook in a post, and while there were people who blasted the woman for leaving her kids out in such a harsh weather there were also people who showed empathy.
#6 Where Is The Father?
One woman commented, "Some of us always make the Mom out to be the Villain..But some of us never ask "Where's the Father". Sounds to me like this woman was trying to do right by getting a Job..which the outcome could've ended terribly. But we have to start to ask and hold these supposed "Men" accountable too..usually the responsibility rests solely on the Mother." Another woman pointed out that the woman was looking for a job so she must have been in desperate need of it, so judging her on the sole basis of it would be rather wrong, "Worst judgement ...BUT if she wasn't looking for a job you'd all be going off on her for being a welfare recipient or something...or copping drugs. But she wasn't . She must had been pretty desperate. Not all people have a support system out here ...or any family. I've raised my three 100% alone...it's not easy. Do we assume she even has a home ? There's a story here ... God Bless them all."
