A mom has been arrested after raking in thousands of dollars from allegedly faking her daughter's cancer.
Pamela Reed, a 41-year-old mother, was arrested after allegations emerged that she fabricated her daughter's cancer diagnosis to swindle thousands of dollars.
The Ohio resident reportedly deceived friends, family, and her community for years, presenting a scenario eerily similar to the infamous case of Dee Dee Blanchard and Gypsy Rose Blanchard.
Reed is accused of posting online that her seven-year-old daughter was blind and battling numerous health issues, including frequent seizures and acute myeloid leukemia.
The New York Post reports that she even went as far as shaving her daughter’s head to convince people of her daughter's illness.
Local community members, moved by the child's unfortunate situation, organized fundraising events and made financial contributions to assist the family with the alleged medical expenses.
This support was detailed in a statement by the Noble County Sheriff's Office.
The deceit began to unravel when a nurse at the child's elementary school noticed inconsistencies.
Contrary to Reed's claims, the nurse discovered that the girl was not blind in her right eye.
Further investigation, including a call to the child’s medical provider, revealed that the daughter never had cancer or leukemia.
A page dedicated to the scheme shows posters for fundraising events, with one organization saying they donated $8,000 to help Reid's daughter.
Despite these efforts, it is alleged that Reed pocketed the funds for personal use.
She had been actively posting on the page since 2017, when her daughter was only 20 months old.
Just two days before her arrest, Reed posted about her daughter's deteriorating condition, writing, “When they told us this was going to be the biggest fight so far, we thought we were prepared, but nothing prepares a parent to see any of this."
"Our hearts are shattered with every single treatment, every single tear and every single night we have to explain."
She also claimed her daughter was battling Severe Aplastic Anemia, a condition where the bone marrow fails to produce sufficient red blood cells, although it's uncertain if this condition was also fabricated.
Reed's manipulation was so extensive that even her other daughter believed her sister was gravely ill.
Now, Reed faces charges of theft by deception, a serious felony, as the truth of her actions comes to light.
