Susan Carland, a sociologist at Melbourne's Monash University, has a unique background: born as a Christian, she converted to Islam fifteen years ago, when she was nineteen. As a result, she is, unfortunately, the recipient of many hate-filled messages.

She could have dealt with this vitriol in many ways, but she has chosen one in particular: for every hateful tweet she receives, she donates $1 to UNICEF, a New York-based United Nations Program that provides assistance to children and mothers in developing countries.

Carland came to this idea after much frustration. "I'd tried blocking, muting, engaging, and ignoring, but none of them felt like I was embodying the Koranic injunction of driving off darkness with light. I felt I should be actively generating good in the world for every ugly verbal bullet sent my way. And so the idea of donating $1 to UNICEF for every hate-filled tweet I received came to me."

Her benevolent solution has received attention from people all over the globe, which has catalyzed thousands more dollars in donations to UNICEF.
