Oprah Winfrey Receives The Prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award At The 2018 Golden Globe Awards
Cecil B. DeMille Award
The media mogul and Entrepreneur accepted the 2018 Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award, in honor for her contribution to the Entertainment Industry. Keeping true to her style Oprah brought everyone at the ceremony to tears with her powerful award acceptance speech talking about sexual harassment, media freedom and racial discrimination at the Golden Globe Awards 2018.
"Time Is Up"
In her speech, Oprah assured the sexual predators that their "time is up." She said, “I want all the girls watching to know a new day is on the horizon. And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure they are the leaders to take us to the time where nobody has to say ‘me too’ again.”
It has been revealed in the past that in the Golden Globe Awards 2018, the celebrities from the Entertainment Industry will be wearing black to show their support for the #metoo campaign.
Honor And Privilege In Sharing The Evening With Everyone
In her speech, Oprah also explained how it felt like to see Sidney Poiter win an Oscar as a child. "I'd never seen a black man being celebrated like that," she said. "I've tried to explain many, many, many times what a moment like that means to a little girl watching from the cheap seats as my mum came through the door bon-tired from cleaning other people's houses."
Further adding to it, she said, "It is not lost on me that, at this moment, there is some little girl watching as I become the first black woman to be given the same award. It is an honour and it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them."
Power Of Truth
Oprah in her acceptance speech made sure to call out the sexual predators and told them that their time up. The Entertainment Industry from this era onwards will be a safe working place for men and women. Oprah also said she feels proud of all the women out there who used the power of truth to fight the justice, "Speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have, and I'm especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough to speak up and share their personal stories."
"This year, we became the story. But it’s not just a story affecting the entertainment industry, it’s one that transcends any culture, or workplace."
Receiving Standing Ovation
A moment of silence was observed when Oprah remembered Recy Taylor, a black woman who was abducted and raped by six white men in Alabama and she never received justice. But Oprah assured the sexual predators "time is up," to which she received a standing ovation from the fellow celebrities.
Reese Witherspoon in her speech gave tribute to Oprah calling her hugs 'the greatest thing ever' and showering her with thank yous.
Media, The True Hero For Revealing The Truth
Oprah also acknowledged the media and pointed out that even under so much suppression it is their tireless efforts that the absolute truth was uncovered. "We all know the press is under siege these days, but we also know it is the insatiable dedication to uncover the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice. To tyrants, to victims, to secrets and lies."
