Jan met ‘Monica' in the 90's when she arrived in his hometown of Antwerp, Belgium as an au-pair to his sister's children. Monica was hired through a work visa with temporary status from Indonesia. Within months, Jan asked Monica to marry him after a battle with the government over Monica's identity.

However, after 19 years of marriage, the 64-year-old Belgian found out that his wife was actually born a man and had been living as one for a long time. Now, the horrified and devastated husband is seeking for annulment.

#3 Belgian Officials Questioned Her Identity From The Start But Allowed Her To Marry And Stay In The Country

He wanted them to start their life in Belgium thus; he immediately arranged and processed her documents. However, the pair encountered difficulties in settling her papers as Belgian courts were doubtful about the authenticity of Monica's identification. Still, they approved her application despite having doubts about her identity and the pair married and she moved in with him and his two children.

#4 The Lived A Happy And 'Normal' Life

Jan said that when he met Monica he was having marital problems and was going through a bitter divorce. For 19 years the couple lived a completely happy and normal life. Jan was relieved when his new bride, much younger than himself, told him that she did not want any children. Jan said that he believed his wife was all female, and she displayed no male tendencies during their marriage.

#5 Hindsight Is 20/20

Looking back on the marriage, Jan explains that Monica would fake her monthly menstruation by using sanitary napkins and red dye to look like blood. He said that he had noticed early on that she always used lubrication, but otherwise their sex life was pretty normal.

Things only took a turn for the worse when Jan began to notice pictures of young, nude men on her computer and that she was working extra shifts but leaving the home with skimpy dresses on. He said that his oldest son had told him he thought he saw Monica at a nightclub.

#6 The Truth Finally Gets Revealed By A Cousin

Soon, Jan discovered amorous messages from other men on her computer, and rumours started to emerge that she may not be who she said she was. He confronted her and they got into a heated argument. But it was not until weeks later when her cousin came to visit them in Belgium that the truth came out. The cousin let the secret slip out accidentally and Jan confronted Monica once more, asking her straight out if she was really a man. She said yes.

She explained that she had been born a male but had the operation at an early age and didn't want to tell Jan because she loved him and didn't want to jeopardise the relationship.

#7 Pending The Annulment They Are Still Living Together

Jan is currently undergoing psychiatric treatment due to his wife's shocking revelation and their annulment is underway. The couple are still living under the same roof after a judge refused to grant Jan an order to evict her.

Jan said that "My world collapsed in a few seconds. I was horrified. I feel like have been violated for almost 20 years." He also explained that "She was always a good mother to my children, and also a fantastic cook, though she wasn't that great at cleaning and ironing - and now I know why."
