Gina and Joshua had to face charges against them after being blamed for abusing their 5-month-old son Teddy. Following the charges the couple had their children taken away by social services and were put in foster care. The real story, however, came to light a few months later when the doctors revealed the truth.
Parents Lose Custody Of Their 5-Month-Old Baby After Being Blamed For Abusing The Child But It's Not What It Appears To Be
#1 Losing Their Children To Social Services
Gina and Joshua lost their children to social services after they were reported by a health officer in the UK for reportedly abusing their 5-month-old baby. According to the Daily Mail reports, every time Gina fed her 5-month-old baby Teddy she would hold him in such a position so that he is secure. And after feeding him she would rub the boy on the back to release any gas.
But soon Teddy started developing bruises on his cheeks. Bruises that ended up getting noticed by the health authorities who then reported the case to social services.
#2 Devastated Upon Losing Their Children In An Instant
The young parents blamed for abusing their child had Teddy and their 6-year-old daughter Amelia taken away from them by social services. Devasted upon losing both their children, Gina and Joshua had no clue on how to deal with the situation.
#3 "I Lost 5 Months Of Their Life"
However, Teddy was soon diagnosed with a medical condition, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), it is a genetic condition in which the body's connective tissues stretch more than the normal. As a result of this abnormal stretching, Teddy's skin appears to be bruised which makes it look like as if the child has been bruised.
Though Gina and Joshua have got both their children back, they are still upset with the fact that they lost 5 months of their children's life. Gina says, "My son and daughter were taken away from me when I did nothing wrong. I lost five months’ bonding during a formative time in their lives. I can never get that back."
#4 Signs Indicating Teddy's Condition
Looking back at it now, Gina says that there were signs about Teddy's conditions but they never figured that it is something serious. "When my mum took him for a cuddle, she said he looked a bit bruised. There were marks on his arms as well. The nurse reassured me it was normal and was a result of him getting a bit squashed during delivery. But it hadn’t been a forceps birth, so I was surprised."
#5 Taking Teddy To The Doctor For A Medical Check-Up
Recalling the horrifying experience, Gina says that after she became suspicious of her son's health she took him to the Doctor for the checkup. "I was taking him to be weighed at six weeks old and the health visitor asked if I had any concerns. I showed her the bruises and she said: ‘Yes, I was about to ask you what they were.’"
#6 Taking Teddy Away
After coming home Gina was feeding Teddy when the social service officers knocked on their door. The officers told the parents that they are taking Teddy in their custody on suspicion of ABH. "When they arrived, I was on the sofa with Teddy on me, asleep. The female officer asked me to turn him round, so she could see him. As soon as she saw his face, she told me she was arresting me on suspicion of ABH."
#7 Gina Was Also Arrested On Suspicion Of ABH
Teddy's dad, Joshua when tried to intervene he was told that they are also arresting his wife Gina and were taking her along with Teddy. "Joshua got upset and tried to intervene. I was hugging Teddy to my chest as they were coming closer. I didn’t want to let go of him, but when they told me they had arrested me and I had to come with them, I agreed to strap him into his car seat. They said if I came nicely, they wouldn’t handcuff me."
It was a long time before the true story came to light and the Doctors revealed the truth behind Teddy's bruised body. During the time the children were in custody, they were not allowed to have any sort of contact with their parents let alone having limited time supervised visits.
#8 Amelia Still Gets Scared Thinking Of Foster Care
Gina says that now that are her children are back home both the parents are trying to make up for the lost time. Their daughter Amelia still does not like to discuss that period and gets nightmares at night, "Amelia remembers it all, but doesn’t like to bring it up, and, mainly at night, still gets scared she might get put into foster care again. When Teddy came back, I didn’t know his routine. It took a while, but we found it again together. He’d got used to a different mum putting him to bed, another voice tucking him in and saying: “Good night.” I don’t think I’ll ever truly recover from that."
