The vast majority of the time, the internet can be a petty, unforgiving place; a place where trolls and white knights alike will hurl insults at one another, where argument and abuse are common to the point it becomes routine. If you spend enough time on the average forum or in the comments section of a website, you’ll quickly come to the conclusion that the philosopher Thomas Hobbes had the right opinion of humanity; namely, that we’re all a bunch of small-minded, rude, morons.
And yet when it really counts, the internet is capable of uniting people in the face of a common goal, particularly when it comes to fighting some perceived injustice. It takes a lot to get the mob to quit bickering, but I can guarantee that needlessly hurting animals or little children is a good way to become public enemy number one. Seriously; if you so much as hint that you’ve sneezed or a cat or laughed at a toddler’s haircut, then be prepared to suffer the consequences.
A mother who posted what she thought was a perfectly honest video has come under fire, after viewers who saw the footage were shocked by the obvious distress her baby seemed to be in.
#1 A controversial video of a baby’s ears being pierced has sparked a fierce debate online with some even regarding it as ‘child abuse.’
The video, which appears to have been filmed in the US, was uploaded to the Facebook page Piercings and has since had 3.8 million views and over 12k shares.
#2 The video, which was posted on the YouTube channel “Crystal Vlogs & More“, has now received over 1,708,000 views as a result.
The video’s description states, “Four and a half-month-old Riley gets her ears pierced. She did well! Only cried for about 30 seconds. And she was her normal happy self. Our family gets our girl's ears pierced when they are Four months old, so they get it over with quickly, and won’t remember the pain. This is the 5th grandchild to get her ears pierced, all have loved them, and have been happy that they were done so young. [sic]”
#3 In the clip, the mom is seen holding her baby daughter while professionals get both of her ears pierced at the same time.
While she seems at ease at first, the child appears to become increasingly distressed as the procedure takes place.
After two workers puncture the baby’s lobes at the same time using a piercing gun, the startled youngster cries out while the mother and staff do their best to comfort her.
Concerned by the footage, the vast majority of comments range from disbelief to hatred, with many calling it ‘child abuse.’
#8 One commenter wrote:
“Why would you do that! Poor baby was panting she was already stressed … abuse it shouldn’t be allowed! [sic]” while another person chimed in: “I walked out of somewhere that was preparing to Pierce a baby’s ears … She could only have been weeks old … I could hear her piercing screams from another end of the precinct.”
#9 Another added:
'This video made me feel sick I have a daughter that is coming up to one and I would never do that to her all for fashion.!!! Then it got me thinking when babies have their jabs they don't cry for that long so to me that shows that must really hurt! I promised myself I would never be a judgemental mom but I am sorry this is abuse in my eyes!'
#4 'This is nothing more than socially acceptable abuse', another said, while a third wrote: 'How wrong, not fit to be a mother.'
Barbaric! Why would anyone do this to a baby?” one Facebook user wrote.
#5 Another added, “All done for the sake of the parents, should be an age limit to stop this from happening.”
While the response was overwhelmingly negative, there were some users that jumped to the mother’s defense.
One person said, “This isn't even a f****** big deal people get over yourself she's not torturing the baby.
#6 “If she doesn't want it when she's older she can take them out.”
While the NHS say that piercing is a fairly safe procedure, as long as it’s carried out by a licensed practitioner a petition calling on the Minister of Children, Edward Timpson, to ban ear piercing for babies has been gaining traction over the past two years.
#7 “It is a form of child cruelty,” the petition reads.
“Severe pain and fear are inflicted upon infants unnecessarily. It serves no purpose other than to satisfy the parent's vanity.”
