One of the largest meth busts in history involved a dog, which led to the discovery of 148 packets of the drug in a truck at the US-Mexico border.
More than 5,000lbs (2,200kg) of meth with an estimated street value of $16m was seized in what authorities are calling a "record-breaking" seizure.
Milo, the police dog, received special credit for his contribution to the successful seizure of the heroin.
"K-9 Milo is a very good boy after helping our deputies and law enforcement partners make one of the biggest methamphetamine busts in San Diego County history," Sheriff Anthony Ray said.
US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Special Agent Shelly Howe expressed her joy at the bust as a major setback for drug gangs.
"This monumental seizure represents another win against drug cartels that fuel addiction in the United States," she said.
"Because of our great partnerships with other law enforcement agencies, we will continue to disrupt the cartels' flow of drugs into our cities."
Rafael Alzua, 37, Mario Contreras, 41, Ethgar Velasquez, 44, and Galdrino Contreras, 41, are the four men that were detained. Agents had been watching them as they loaded "dozens of cardboard boxes" into a Dodge van while they were being watched.
Officers later detained the individuals and accused them of plotting to distribute methamphetamine.
If the guys are proven guilty, they could face a $10 million punishment in addition to life in jail.
