“Hey bud, just put your hands up for us alright?” A video showing a San Diego police officer allegedly training a gun on an 8-year-old during a traffic stop has sparked outrage
A video showing a traffic stop has caused outrage where it shows a police officer allegedly pointing his gun at an 8-year-old child.
The incident which took place in San Diego occurred when the child’s father was stopped by the police for going 70 mph in a 40mph zone.
After a picture which depicted the police officer directly pointing his gun at the 8-year-old was posted online, it sparked outrage. It was in response to this that the police then released bodycam footage of the same incident.
According to the police officer the gun was pointed at the vehicle and not the child but the small distances and angle of the video make it difficult to tell.
The officer however is heard asking the child, “hey bud, just put your hands up for us alright?”
The child is then directed to come forward towards the police officers. As he does so the father can be heard saying,
“Can you take the gun off him, bro? Can you take that gun off of him? He's eight years old, man.”
The child is then asked to sit on the curb as another police officer asks him a series of questions,
“You don't have any weapons on you, right?”
The police officer then proceeds to explain the situation to the child.
“Your dad was driving really, really fast. Did it feel like that to you? No? OK. Did you hear the siren behind you guys for a while? Yeah? Well, so, your dad was supposed to pull over when that siren was going, and he didn't for whatever reason.”
The police also stated that the traffic stop was considered high-risk since the driver did not stop when first prompted to and continued to speed over the limit.
The other police officer continues to explain the situation to the child.
“So, we don't know what's going on, and that's why we had to pull out the guns and stuff like that, because we don't know who he is. We don't know who you are. We don't know who's in the car. So that's why, bud, OK”
'You, you're not in trouble, OK?'
The driver was then given a misdemeanor citation for reckless driving. The father and child left together after this incident.
