A police vehicle pursuit gone wrong ended up in a flipped car carrying a pregnant woman. The car was flipped after the woman had already slowed down and initiated her hazard lights.
A shocking video has gone viral on the internet showing a vehicle being flipped over as a result of police intervention.
Dashcam footage from July 2020 shows Nicole Harper’s vehicle being turned over after she had already slowed down and had been flashing her hazard lights.
Being at a dangerous turn, Harper had slowed down and flashed her right indicator to show she was turning into the lane and was about to stop.
It is at this point that officer Rodney Dunn speeds up and tips her vehicle at the corner. This is an official PIT maneuver initiated by police officers which causes vehicles to tip over.
The maneuver is initiated during car chases.
Harper who was pregnant at the time was luckily not injured as a cause of the crash, can be seen telling the police officer that she had her flashers on.
To this Officer Dunn replied, “It doesn’t matter, ma’am.”
According to Arizona law, when told to stop in an unsafe location, drivers are supposed to slow down and indicate until they can reach a safe location to stop. This meant that Harper’s actions were perfectly in accordance with the law.
Harper, however was still charged with fleeing from the law after the incident and was given a speeding ticket.
Harper’s lawyer said to the press, “There was a less dangerous and more safe avenue that could have been taken before flipping her vehicle and making it bounce off a concrete barrier going 60 miles an hour.”
Officer Dunn’s police department however released a statement, standing firmly at his side. They said that the “fleeing driver [who] could have chosen to end the pursuit” and that the PIT maneuver was used “among those who choose to obey the law against those who choose to run from police.”
