Ever wondered why Priscilla Presley decided to end her marriage with Elvis? Well, the former Mrs. Presley recently opened up about it on the British panel show, Loose Women. She was too young and her parents wanted the best for her, so they allowed a teenaged Priscilla to marry the crooner who had a thing for younger women. He was ten years older than her at the time.
Priscilla Reveals The Real Reason She Divorced Elvis
#1 They Met When She Was 14
The couple met when she was just 14 years old and Elvis was 24 and stationed in Germany while in the military. They moved in together when she was 17 at the urging of her own parents.
#2 They Married In 1967
The couple got married when she was 21, Elvis was then 31, in 1967. There were still a lot of growing pains along the way. "I didn't have my teenage years, of course, and I lived his life," she said.
#3 She Felt Threatened Moving Into His Mansion In Tennessee
"It was difficult, especially moving into Graceland. He already had his inner circle," she told the women on the British talk show Loose Women. "Of course everyone embraced me, but I never realized that that was going to be my life, forever." She said "I felt like everyone was watching my every move in Graceland. It wasn't comfortable for me."
#4 They Stayed Inside Of Graceland And Didn't Do Anything
She says the two didn't really ever go out or to any dinners, events, or gatherings. "I mean, I truly was living in a bubble," she claims. Being sheltered from others her own age took a toll on her.
#5 She Was Not Allowed An Outside Life
She said that she didn't have a life of her own. She saw the movies he wanted to see, she listened to the music he wanted to hear and went to the places where he wanted to be seen with her. She says that Elvis didn't like watching her put on her makeup or clothes. He preferred to see her "finished" and she never dressed in front of him or applied her makeup or did her hair in his presence.
#6 They Had A Daughter Together
Nine months later, Priscilla gave birth to their only child, daughter Lisa Marie. It may have been an exciting time for the couple, but Elvis' former wife admitted that balancing family life with fame wasn't easy. "It was difficult, especially at a young age, being a new wife and automatically being a new mother and being in rock and roll. The three really don't mix," she said.
#7 She Decided To Take Dance Classes When He Was Away
She claims that the times Elvis was on tour are the only times she had to herself. She said she would take a dance class to try and break free from the "bubble" she was stuck in. It was after a few years of this that she realized that relationships were not supposed to be this way.
#8 She Didn't Know Who She Was
When she turned 27 she decided to move on. Priscilla revealed that she had to leave Elvis in order to find herself. "As a woman, I didn't really know who I was," she claims. "It's sad to think back on, but he was living in the same unreal world and wanted me there."
#9 She Decided To Leave Graceland
She said that her considerations were his considerations, her likes were his likes, and she had no idea what she was supposed to like and be as a person. Once she came to this realization she knew it was time to leave Graceland and Elvis.
#10 They Had Wonderful Times But Many Difficult Ones Too
Though Presley said she and the late rock legend shared some "wonderful times" together, the intense public scrutiny during and after the marriage made things difficult. "I was hated for marrying him, hated for getting a divorce," she said. "Having people being critical but not knowing what your life was and not knowing that you were trying desperately to be a good wife, to be a good mother, to be a good companion, it was a hard road."
#11 He Was The Love Of Her Life
"I did not divorce Elvis because I didn't love him. Let's get that straight," she said. "He was the love of my life, truly." After so long, there are still haters out there who think she married him for the money and fame but she claims she was young and he swept her away.
#12 She Left Him To Find Herself And Never stopped Loving Elvis
"If anything, I left because I needed to find out what the world was like, really," she said. Though the couple reportedly renewed their vows in Hawaii several years after first saying "I do" in Vegas, the marriage ultimately ended in divorce in 1973.
#13 They Remained Close Until His Death In 1977
Even after finalizing their divorce, they still loved each other, she said, and they left the courthouse holding hands. The agreement granted Priscilla ownership of a 1971 Mercedes-Benz, a 1969 Cadillac El Dorado, a 1971 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, a Los Angeles apartment, $700,000 in cash, and half the income from the sale of their three houses in California. They agreed to settle everything this way to avoid legal and public attention. Their daughter, Lisa Marie got child support for an undisclosed amount and was in charge of his estate after the singer passed away in 1977. He never remarried.
