Hakeem “Chamillionaire” Seriki is probably best known for his song ‘Riding Dirty”, which was his only real musical success.
But since then, Chamillionaire has had a ton of BUSINESS success. It started when Hakeem invested in Maker Studios, during their first round of financing – at the time, the company was only valued at $1.5M.
Most one-hit-wonders fade into obscurity, never to be heard from again.
Hakeem Seriki is the exception.
You may know Sereki as "Chamillionaire."
In 2009, his hit "Ridin' Dirty" blew up the charts.
Weird Al himself took notice.
And we know that, in the popular music business, Weird Al parodying your song is a sure sign of success.
Early in his career, Seriki did what many one-hit-wonders fail to do: he invested his earnings wisely.
In 2010, Seriki invested in the fledgling Maker Studios. At the time of his investment, Seriki's total net worth was estimated at $1.5 million.
Four years later, the Walt Disney Corporation purchased Maker Studios for $1 billion.
Seriki's take on the deal reportedly was $50 million.
Since the sale of Maker Studios, Seriki has been enjoying his newfound wealth.
Courtside seats at a Lakers-Warriors game aren't cheap.
Seriki nevertheless continues to save and invest wisely.
Now he can just do more of it.
He might not look like it, but Seriki is an influential venture capitalist based in California.
Lately, Seriki has been working in the role of "entrepreneur in residence" at the Los Angeles-based Upfront Ventures.
Even from the very beginning of his career, Seriki understood the power of new technology.
"All the other rappers called me a nerd for using the Internet," Seriki recently told a gathering of tech entrepreneurs at Stanford University.
So yes, one-hit-wonders, there is life after that one big hit.
Take a page from Chamillionaire's playbook: save and invest that bit of money that you make.
